1. Morgan Wallen, “Sand in My Boots”
💿 Dangerous: The Double Album • 🏷 Big Loud / Republic • 📅 2021
“Somethin’ ‘bout the way she kissed mе tells me she’d lovе Eastern Tennessee / Yeah, but all I brought back with me was some sand in my boots.” 🎙 Morgan Wallen commences 💿 Dangerous: The Double Album with a surefire bang. No, 🎵 “Sand in My Boots” isn’t an up-tempo country banger, but it is a gorgeous country ballad that ‘gives off those feels.’
Wallen showcases his terrific instrument, singing with incredible expression and nuance. The songwriting is solid, particularly the centerpiece, the passionate chorus:
“Dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado Like a heart-broke Desperado, headin’ right back to my roots.”

2. Nancy Sinatra, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”
💿 Boots • 🏷 Boots Enterprises Inc. • 📅 1966
“Are you ready, boots? Start walking!” 🎙 Nancy Sinatra is the daughter of an iconic musician, 🎙 Frank Sinatra. Furthermore, she’s a musician herself, among many other accomplishments and accolades. As a musician, Nancy is renowned for one song in particular: 🎵 “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.” The classic appears on her 1966 album, 💿 Boots.
“These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” is a prime example of a novelty song. It’s that ‘once in a lifetime’ number that’s cutesy, corny, and schmaltzy, yet incredibly irresistible. Sinatra is even playful in her vocal performance, amplifying the tongue-n-cheek sensibilities. “You been messing where you shouldn’t have been messing,” she sings on the first verse, continuing, “And now someone else is getting all your best.” Those vibes continue as the song progresses, with Sinatra asserting on the second verse, “You keep saming when you ought to be changing.” It’s far more violent on the third verse, where, “I’ve just found me a brand new box of matches, yeah / And what he knows you ain’t had time to learn.” Of course, the crème de la crème – the crowning achievement – is the chorus where:
“These boots are made for walking And that’s just what they’ll do One of these days these boots Are gonna walk all over you.”
Worth noting, 🎙 Jessica Simpson covered 🎵 “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”. It’s an interesting interpretation 😏 (keep reading – it’s on this list too!).

3. Kesha, “Boots”
💿 Rainbow • 🏷 Kemosabe • 📅 2017
“I have boys in every country code / Just a rollin’ stoner on a roll / I’d bring the cowgirl out and cock them guns / Always leave before the cowboy comes.” It probably won’t surprise you that boots in the hands of 🎙 Kesha go beyond footwear. 🎵 “Boots,” which appears on her 2017 comeback album, 💿 Rainbow, is kinky – sexually driven. A fun, minor-key pop cut, the groove is killer, and she exhibits incredible personality.
With Rainbow ultimately being characterized as her most mature album, “Boots” manages to have similar oomph to her past work with a smidge more maturity. Also, worth noting, prior to Rainbow, Kesha sang about boots on her 2010 debut album, 💿 Animal. On 🎵 “Boots & Boys”, she asserts, “Boots and boys (Boots and boys) / They bring me so much joy (Bring me joy).” She’s got a point.

4. Southerland, “Boot Up”
💿 Boot Up (EP) • 🏷 Sony • 📅 2021
Question: What do country musicians do? Well, they write and perform songs about country things, of course! For country duo 🎙 Southerland, they countrify us with 🎵 “Boot Up.” “Boot Up” fittingly commences their 2021 EP, also titled, 💿 Boot Up. It just feels right, doesn’t it?
With “Boot Up,” Southerland play to a tried-and-true script. Again, Country artists are expected to be country, and part of the checklist means wearing boots. Of course, it’s more than just the shoes. “Boot Up” does a fine job of capturing the southern experience given its mention of all things traditional. This is a blue-collar song, or at least a song that speaks to those who’d characterize themselves as blue collar and enjoy some country music. The chorus, of course, is the crème de la crème – the crowning achievement!
“We go to work in ‘em Sun up to sun down Church in ‘em Make your mama real proud Yeah, them good ol’ boys makin’ noise down south Boot up.”
5. Greyson Chance, “Boots”
🎵 “Boots” • 🏷 GCM / Arista • 📅 2019
“Ooh, I feel like I’m running…” 🎙 Greyson Chance unleashed 🎵 “Boots” in 2019, showing us what a legitimate cowboy looks like as opposed to faux ones constructing faux ‘Western imagery.’ The record is brief but incredibly effective. 🎛 Bram Inscore and 🎛 Sean Kennedy, construct a fine backdrop for Chance to paint upon. Following his ‘running’ intro, he wastes no time ‘cowboying it up’ like the Oklahoma-bred boy he is, dissing the fake cowboys of California.
“I’ve been western before all of these punks,” he sings, continuing, “These punks in California who think they can punch.” Later, he trades ‘punks’ for ‘stars,’ singing, “These stars in California who think that they are hard.” Of course, Chance couldn’t have a killer boot song without referencing 🎙 Nancy Sinatra: “Boots with the big heels, hot like I’m Nancy.” Don’t think Chance is totally ‘old fashioned’ either: “I’m smoking way too loud; I’m feeling good high now.” 420 Friendly he is.

6. Luke Bryan, “Knockin’ Boots”
💿 Born Here Live Here Die Here • 🏷 Capitol Nashville • 📅 2020
“Yeah, birds need bees and ice needs whiskey / Boys like me need girls like you to kiss me… / Boots need knockin’, knockin’ boots / Knockin’ boots, me and you, oh.” 🎙 Luke Bryan effectively, if utterly cornily, ‘makes love’ in a country sort of way on 🎵 “Knockin’ Boots”, a single from 💿 Born Here Live Here Die Here that dates back to 2019.
“Knockin’ Boots” isn’t the most traditional country cut, but also doesn’t force the modern pop hand. Bryan incorporates the usual country clichés – his truck (“This truck needs a half tank / These wheels need a two-lane”), drinking (“Cheap drinks need a-slingin’”), and of course, ‘making love’ without crossing the line (“That dress needs to slip off” and “And backseats need I want you so bad”). The crème de la crème is the chorus, excerpted at the top in all its vanilla, sensual glory.

7. Myylo, “Doc Martens”
💿 I’m a Nice Boy (EP) • 🏷 Myylo • 📅 2019
“My music is pretty preoccupied with boys and love,” 🎙 Myylo asserts when we interviewed him in 2019. He answer is perfectly realized on 🎵 “Doc Martens” from his 2019 EP, 💿 I’m a Nice Boy. “Doc Martens and cotton Ts / Blessed to death with his daddy’s genes / Skinny body by creatine / I think I’ll make him fall in love with me.” Have shoes ever sounded as hot as they do in his hands? The stellar single isn’t really about those snazzy boots, but more about the man that he’s digging. There’s so much to love about “Doc Martens” including the exuberant production and the tongue-n-cheek songwriting. One indisputable selling point is the flawless, ripe falsetto. The vocals are 🔥.
One of the best parts of the song besides the verse:
“Get him back him to my house Kiss him up in my bedroom Spilling all of our secrets Curled up on my pillows Make him bacon in the AM So, we don’t break up till the world end.”

8. Aaron Watson, “Boots”
💿 American Soul • 🏷 BIG Label • 📅 2021
It should come as no surprise that multiple country musicians appear on a BOOTS compendium. 🎙 Aaron Watson gets into the actions with his song titled – wait for it – 🎵 “Boots.” “Boots” appears as the second track on his 2021 album, 💿 American Soul. While the shoes are part of what Watson sells, “Boots” is less about footwear than the title suggests.
“I never want this night to end You got me three sheets to the wind Like a record we’re spinning around And I can’t keep my boots to the ground.”
Sure, the boots are integral – it’s the ‘country way’ – but Watson is more focused on a lady than Dr. Martens, Grenson, or Timberland. “I can’t keep my boots on the ground tonight when they’re underneath your bed, baby,” he sings on the bridge. That marks one of the most clever lyrics of the song, confirming Watson is in awe of this woman, so much so that boots that are literally on the ground aren’t… In all honesty, this is an enjoyable record that Watson sings passionately. Oh, and it won’t surprise you to know that this isn’t the first ‘boot’ song Aaron has recorded.
9. Five Finger Death Punch, “Boots and Blood”
💿 Got Your Six • 🏷 Prospect Park • 📅 2015
“Think of one word to change the world / And now put it into action / Fuck!” Question: Do you enjoy ‘fuckery,’ in the form of numerous f-bombs? If so, then 🎙 Five Finger Death Punch have a total, fucking listening experience tailor made to you.
Okay, I’ll stop swearing, but 🎙 Ivan Moody and FFDP won’t – I swear! My apologies for my French, but 🎵 “Boots and Blood” features no less than 25 utterances of ‘fuck’ in some form or fashion. Yes, there are boots but honestly, I think Moody was just feeling extra ‘moody’ on this record from 💿 Got Your Six.
So, what’s all the fuss about? Deplorables, it seems. “Boots and blood to give it all” and a heaping does of “Fuck it” perfectly describe this booted-up joint. Specific folks that make Moody pissed: druggies, drunks, wannabes, punks, dealers, priests, lowlifes… Just accepted the fact that “You’re all fucked in your heads,” or so Five Finger Death Punch assert.
10. Jon Pardi, “Head Over Boots”
💿 California Sunrise • 🏷 Capitol Nashville • 📅 2016
“You’re good for my soul, it’s true / I’m head over boots for you.” Woo! 🎙 Jon Pardi loves his B-O-O-T-S. On his 2016 album, 💿 California Sunrise, there are actually two boot songs: 🎵 “Dirt on My Boots” and 🎵 “Head Over Boots.” For this list, we’ll focus merely on the latter.
Like some of the other country musicians on this list, the boots are essential – you can’t be country and NOT wear them! That said, boots aren’t the biggest part of the record. Like 🎙 Aaron Watson earlier on 🎵 “Boots”, the opposite sex is the focal point. According to Pardi, she’s the ‘sugar honey iced tea’:
“‘Cause you’re the one I want You’re the one I need Baby, if I was a king Ah, you would be my queen You’re the rock in my roll You’re good for my soul, it’s true I’m head over boots for you.”
Honestly, doesn’t that just say it all? Furthermore, since Pardi doesn’t wear heels, he just changes the expression to boots to suit him.
11. Jessica Simpson, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”
💿 The Dukes of Hazzard (Music from the Motion Picture) • 🏷 Columbia • 📅 2005
“Are you ready boots / Start walkin’!” Back in the day, 🎙 Jessica Simpson had a run. She’s earned gold and platinum singles and albums. Furthermore, she cemented her place in pop culture with a questionable reality (📺 Newlyweds), as well as her cover of 🎵 “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”. What’s most notable regarding the cover of “Boots” is the music video, which is rowdy, titillating, must-see TV. I mean, 🎙 Willie Nelson guests and hits a man over the head with a beer bottle! Now that’s bad ass!
Focusing on the song, In Jessica Simpson’s hands, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” gets more country-pop flavor (🎛 Jimmy Jam and 🎛 Terry Lewis produce) compared to the 🎙 Nancy Sinatra version that appears earlier on this BOOTS centric list. Simpson is playful in her vocal performance – cutesy matching the novel nature of the record. There’s no way you leave and feel like you’ve heard a vocal masterclass (no shade intended… well… not that much). That said, given the fact that “Boots” is novel, Simpson’s exaggerated tongue-n-cheek take is successful. Jessica’s version also changes some lyrics and adds some sections including a post-chorus, bridge, and a cool breakdown section:
“Hey y’all Wanna come and see something? (Uh-uh, uh-uh) Can’t touch, can I get a hand clap? For the way I work my back Tick-tock, all around the clock, drop it Push ya tush, like that Can I get a suueey? (Suueey) Can I get a yee-haw? (Yee-haw).”
If nothing else, Simpson and the songwriting and production team ensure this remake adds some original touches. That’s admirable.
