To quote 🎙 Tink, “On my shoulders, got more weight than ever / ‘Heat of the Moment”, I won’t feel no pressure.”  Woo! How about some lyrics from 🏆 Grammy-winner, 🎙 Toni Braxton? “The heat is movin’ through your body,” Braxton sings in the chorus of 🎵 “The Heat”, continuing, “Temperature is rising / Can you feel the heat, the heat?” Well, can you? Last, but not least, how about tapping 🎙 Young the Giant and 🎙 Sameer Gadhia for a line or two or three? “Feel like it’s been forever / Since I had my shit together,” Gadhia sings in 🎵 “Heat of the Summer”, adding in the chorus, “I just do what I wanna / In the heat of the summer.” Agreed!

Okay, so, what do all of these lyrics and song titles have in common? It’s simple folks.  Each of the songs and the lyrics highlights the word, HEAT. This 11-song music compendium, 🎧 11 Songs That Generate Tremendous Heat, is comprised of songs that feature the word heat in their respective titles.  Five of the songs reappear from a recent miniature list, Heat: 5ive Songs No. 42 (2022). It’s worth noting, the three songs excerpted above don’t appear on this list.  Furthermore, a famous heat song – 🎙 Glenn Frey’s 🎵 “The Heat is On” – doesn’t appear either.  No worries, because there are 11 gems here… or maybe 10 because one is a bit, um, sketchy! 🎧 11 Songs That Generate Tremendous Heat features music courtesy of 🎙 Beyoncé, 🎙 Glass Animals, 🎙 The Isley Brothers, 🎙 Jamiroquai, and 🎙 Martha Reeves & The Vandellas among others. So, let’s get totally heated and check out these HEAT-filled musical selections!

1. Beyoncé, “Heated”

💿 RENAISSANCE 🏷 Parkwood Entertainment LLC / Columbia • 🗓 2022

Beyoncé, RENAISSANCE [📷: Parkwood Entertainment LLC / Columbia]“Got a lot of bands, got a lot of Chanel on me / I gotta fan myself off  (Fan me off) / … I gotta cool down, heated.” In 2022, the most awarded woman in 🏆 Grammy history, 🎙 Beyoncé, began her 💿 RENAISSANCE.  While it took six years for this renaissance to commence, the dance/house-driven makeover is a bold, ultra-successful return for one of music’s brightest stars.  The brilliant LP didn’t arrive sans controversy, including the heat-driven record at hand, 🎵 “Heated.”

“Heated” is another enjoyable, well-rounded musical selection from RENAISSANCE.  I wouldn’t doubt that some might dub it a highlight.  All told, “Heated” continues the badassery of Beyoncé and the album.  That said, originally, there was an ableist slur – much like 🎙 Lizzo’s 🎵 “GRRRLS” –  that had to be removed.  Does the fact that there was an ableist slur, albeit not intended to be harmful, dim the shine of “Heated?” Personally, I don’t think so, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions.  From my perspective, “Heated” is superbly produced, Beyoncé serves up ample personality, and the lyrics in the chorus specifically are catchy.  In other words, don’t let the controversy, which has since been atoned for, get you too heated on “Heated” 😉.

2. Glass Animals, “Heat Waves”

💿 Dreamland • 🏷 Wolf Tone • 📅 2020

Glass Animals, Dreamland [📷: Wolf Tone]“Sometimes, all I think about is you / Late nights in the middle of June / Heat waves been fakin’ me out / Can’t make you happier now.” 🎙 Glass Animals had a truly dominant hit with 🎵 “Heat Waves,” which hailed from their 2020 studio album, 💿 Dreamland.  The collective led by 🎙 Dave Bayley, hadn’t previously charted on the Billboard Hot 100! That, of course, changed with the ascent of “Heat Waves,” which made history by rising to no. 1 in its 59th charting week! “Heat Waves,” unsurprisingly, has been certified multiplatinum by the RIAA while Dreamland benefits too, earning the band’s first gold album.

What makes “Heat Waves” so good and impactful? Starting with the impactful part, Glass Animals can thank TikTok, which is a gargantuan force in the music industry. Beyond the addictive, viral app, “Heat Waves” is just one of those awesome records.  The lyrics are catchy, particularly the centerpiece, the chorus.  Dave Bayley sings well, in his traditional voice.  Also, the pitch-shifted vocals, which appear early on, are a cool effect.  Beyond songwriting and vocal performance, the production is another selling point.  “Heat Waves” benefits from an infectious groove and its dreamy, colorful synths.

3. Yung Spinach Cumshot, “Heat” (Ft. mannyily)

💿 Heat (EP) • 🏷 Big PP • 📅 2021

Yung Spinach Cumshot, Heat (EP) [📷: Big PP]“… I don’t use protection / A condom’s way too small to contain my erection…” 😏 😏 😏 Sometimes, it’s best to take things with a grain of salt.  When your name stage name is 🎙 Yung Spinach Cumshot, that’s definitely ‘take it with a grain of salt’ vibes.  To be 100% honest, I had NO intentions of including Yung Spinach Cumshot on this heated list because I had no idea who he was.  But, while searching for an 11th heat song to complete this heated musical compendium, how can you resist a rapper with such an, um, inappropriate name who just happens to have a song named 🎵 “Heat”?  Not only does “Heat” commence his 2021 EP, but the EP also happens to be named, 💿 Heat (EP). You now understand why this 11th song – which should’ve been an afterthought – ended up being firmly planted in 🎧 11 Songs That Generate Tremendous Heat!

Going back to the “take it with a grain of salt” part, you totally can’t take this dumb song seriously! This is all about ridiculous rap clichés that aren’t the least bit transcendent. In the first verse, it doesn’t take long for Yung Spinach to drop the f-bomb and totally feel himself.  “I got girls on my nutsack, one of them’s your hoe,” he asserts, continuing, “I make her booty jiggle, call that fucking booty shaker.” Um, sure. He doesn’t stop there, adding, “Your mom gives me neck, your bitch gives me dome / Once I got rejected just for having an Android phone.” Mercy! In the chorus, we finally get the ‘heat’ he’s referencing, (“Bitch I’m dropping heat”) and we learn that he “be fuckin’ with your cousin.” TMI! As for 🎙 mannyily, in the second verse, he also gets into this ‘mom’ action: “I chill with yo mom and then we get to gamin’ / Gamin’, she suck my dick like a raisin.” Uh, yeah, I feel like I lost intelligence listening to “Heat”…

4. The Isley Brothers, “The Heat Is On, Pts. 1 & 2”

💿 The Heat Is On 🏷 Sony • 📅 2015

The Isley Brothers, The Heat Is On [📷: Sony Music Entertainment]It’s amazing how many different, truly epic, soul collectives thrived back in the day. Among the most iconic is none other than 🎙 The Isley Brothers.  Something that has made 🎙 Ronald Isley and company so enduring is their ability to evolve seamlessly throughout their storied career, which began in the 1950s.  Sure, in the 2020s, it’s Ron and 🎙 Ernie Isley that retain 🎙 The Isley Brothers’ name but back in the day, specifically during the 1970s, when 💿 The Heat Is On was released, The Isley Brothers included 🎙 Rudolph Isley, 🎙 O’Kelly Isley Jr. (deceased), 🎙 Marvin Isley (deceased), and 🎙 Chris Jasper.  Most of the original members appear on the five-and-a-half minutes of funky goodness that is 🎵 “The Heat is On, Pts. 1 & 2”.

From the onset of “The Heat is On,” there is no way you can listen without moving your body.  The groove is incredibly F-U-N-K-Y. The backdrop is gnarly! The keyboard lines (clavinet) kick some serious butt.  Other notes include the expressive, nuanced lead vocals by Ronald Isley.  I love the grit he employs.  Also, the harmonized vocals are another awesome touch.  How about that marvelous guitar 🎸 solo around the 3:15 mark, which gives this soul cut some rock sensibility 🤘. Thematically, this record encompasses love.  In the third verse, Isley sings, “The charge of love is on the way / Make it easy, make me stay / In case you can’t hang on / Move on, the heat is on.” Woo! Truly, while listening to “The Heat is On,” “I [You] can feel the heat.” Sure, 🎙 The Isley Brothers have more renowned hits in their extensive discography.  That said, 🎵 “The Heat is On, Pts. 1 & 2” marks one of their better, and certainly, funkiest moments.  This, my friends, is a certified, surefire, undeniable funk/soul bop.

5. Kelly Clarkson, “Heat”

💿 Meaning of Life🏷 Atlantic • 📅 2017

Kelly Clarkson, Meaning of Life [📷: Atlantic]“You used to make me feel like a diamond / Now it don’t even seem like you’re tryin’ / So give me one good reason I should need you.” Woo! #Damn Daniel🎵 “Heat,” the second full-length song, and third overall track from 🎙 Kelly Clarkson’s 2017 album,  💿 Meaning of Life, isn’t lukewarm – it’s hot peeps! Clarkson is feisty and charged-up on this highlight, as she requests “more heat” from her man.  It seems however, he needs to do his part and reinvigorate things. Oh, snap!

In the first verse, the 🏆 Grammy winner complains, “I’m stumblin’ through the darkness / There ain’t no sign of a spark here.” Oh no! She continues, “I’m used to feelin’ that fire / You watered down that desire.” Yeah, bro, you better step it up! She’s putting in work and you, well, you must match it and “turn this around!”

6. Greta Van Fleet, “Heat Above”

💿 The Battle at Garden’s Gate 🏷 Republic • 📅 2021

Greta Van Fleet, The Battle at Garden's Gate [📷: Republic]“Can you hear that dreadful sound? / Fire still burning on the ground.” Did you know that 🎙 Greta Van Fleet is a 🏆 Grammy-winning rock band? Yes, it’s true! The Michigan band won the Grammy for Best Rock Album for their 2017 debut album, 💿 From the Fires, at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.  In 2021, the 🎙 Josh Kiszka-fronted collective released their third studio album, 💿 The Battle at Garden’s Gate, which debuted at no. 7 on the Billboard 200 (it only charted for eight weeks, however).  You might argue that Kiszka and company ‘bring the heat’ on the opening track, 🎵 “Heat Above.”

“Sorrows of the Earth / May our tears of rain wash down to bathe you,” Kiszka sings in the first verse.  He continues, “This is what life is worth / When the fires still burn and rage all around.” Thought-provoking to say the least. Josh’s vocals remain polarizing, depending on whom you ask. His vocal timbre is whiny, incredibly distinct, and of course, high-pitched.  It’s his pipes that earn comparisons to 🎙 Robert Plant, of course, while the band’s retro quality earns comparisons to Plant’s iconic band, 🎙 Led Zeppelin. But before Kiszka sings, “Heat Above” commences with a warm, sonorous organ – one of the best moments of the song in my opinion.  Eventually, “Heat Above” evolves into groovy, rock cut with plenty of ear-catching sounds, led by the guitars, of course. Going back to Kiszka’s unique instrument, even if the voice isn’t your cup of tea, he manages to deliver a radiant melody and some intriguing vocal riffs throughout “Heat Above.”

7. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, “(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave”

💿 Heat Wave 🏷 Motown • 📅 1963

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Heat Wave [📷: Motown]“Whenever I’m with him / Something inside / Starts to burnin’ / And I’m filled with desire.” Ooh, wee! 🎵 “(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave” commences 🎙 Martha Reeves & The Vandellas’ 1963 album, 💿 Heat Wave with a surefire BANG! It’s an epic opening statement.  It comes as no surprise that “(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave” was a top-five hit on the Billboard Hot 100.  “(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave” was written by the legendary team of 🎼 ✍ 🎛 Brian Holland, 🎼 ✍ Eddie Holland, and 🎼 ✍ 🎛 Lamont Dozier (rest in peace, king). Brian Holland and Dozier also produced the record.

“It’s like a heat wave

Burnin’ in my heart (It’s like a heat wave)

I can’t keep from cryin’ (It’s like a heat wave)

It’s tearin’ me apart.”

“(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave” features exuberant production and an alluring sound.  Live horns, including a potent, punchy baritone saxophone marks one of the best instrumental features. 🎙 Martha Reeves serves up assertive, high-energy vocals.  Her performance can be characterized by the personality – the attitude and the confidence – she emits while singing (“Has high blood pressure got a hold of me / Or is this the way love’s supposed to be?”).  The lyrics are fun, lighthearted, and novel – incredibly idiomatic of the 1960s. This is a prime example of a vintage soul, pop crossover hit that you can’t help but dance to when it comes on the radio or elsewhere, even 60 years after it first arrived.

8. Lil Baby & Gunna, “Heatin Up”

💿 My Turn • 🏷 Quality Control Music / Motown • 📅 2020

Lil Baby, My Turn [📷: Quality Control Music / Motown]In 2020, 🏆 Grammy-nominated, Atlanta rapper 🎙 Lil Baby (Dominique Jones) had a highly successful album on his hands. 💿 My Turn, his sophomore LP, was one of the biggest album of the year.  You might say, Jones totally turned up the heat.  Of course, things totally heated up on My Turn on 🎵 “Heatin Up.”

“Heatin Up” is produced by 🎛 Quay Global, who provides Lil Baby with ample fuel for the fire.  This is a minor-key banger, which is right up his alley. Additionally, he’s assisted by another incredibly popular rapper, 🎙 Gunna. Baby kicks things off in a heated fashion, wowing with his flow, filled with cockiness, confidence, and drip: “Man, these racks gettin’ too big for these skinny clothes / I might put me an M in some big Girbaud.” Woo! As for Gunna, he also flaunts his rhythmic approach, sometimes indecipherably, but always giving off vibes.

9. Chris Brown, “Heat” (Ft. Gunna)

💿 Indigo 🏷 RCA • 📅 2019

Chris Brown, Indigo [📷: RCA]“This drip got you in heat / Just jump in, baby girl, hop on this dick, yeah.” Honestly, is there any need to finish this 🎙 Chris Brown lyric from the chorus of 🎵 “Heat”? Of course, not – you know exactly what the confident, Grammy-winning R&B singer was instructing the nameless lady to do!  But, I guess if you’re a fine-looking, rich, bad boy like Brown is, you can bag any girl you want.  And that, my friends, is what this number from his 2019 album, 💿 Indigo, is all about.  Oh, and for good measure, he taps 🎙 Gunna for the assist.

Before diving into some of the confident and cocky lines served up by both, 🎛 Buddah Bless produces the backdrop.  Indeed, Brown and Gunna have some fuel for their un-humbled, sexed-, and dripped-up fire.  So, with a knocking beat behind him, Brown asserts, “If you throw it, it’s gon’ get knocked up / You playin’ hide and seek, I’m a find you / Baby, hold on tight when you ride me…” Woo! Okay, then. What happens in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom, right? Moving on, Gunna informs her in the second verse, “Once I fuck you good, I got you / in your feelings / Birkin bags and Goyard pouches / Got you drippin’.” Woo! It’s just something about those Birkin bags, isn’t it? If it’s not crystal clear, “Heat” isn’t super-deep or honestly, deep at all.  It is a sex and flex-fest, though.

10. Calvin Harris, “Heatstroke” (Ft. Young Thug, Pharrell Williams & Ariana Grande)

💿 Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1. • 🏷 Sony • 📅 2017

Calvin Harris, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 [📷: Columbia]🎙 Calvin Harris is a beast – a Scottish, musical beast that is! The DJ/producer dropped a surefire gem with his 2017 album, 💿 Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1.  Worth noting, that in 2022, Harris returned with the follow-up,  💿 Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2.  Things got really hot for Harris on Vol. 1’s second single 🎵 “Heatstroke”, which enlisted assists from 🎙 Young Thug, 🎙 Pharrell Williams, and 🎙 Ariana Grande! This unlikely cast of characters surprises on this hot, totally heated record.

“Heated” is an enjoyable and incredibly groovy record. Young Thug earns the biggest role, laying claim to the intro, and both verses. “Tell me how you feel right now / ‘Cause all I wanna do is keep it real right now,” he raps, continuing, “I’m tryna beat it up, Beat Pills right now / Athletic in the sheets, I got skills right now.” Woo! His contributions are all flex, built on his sex game.  Pharrell arrives, singing in the chorus (“Release, let go, and have a good time”), with Grande joining in with a small, but notable role (“When you do things like this / And you set me free…”). All told, “Heatstroke” is the perfect, made-for-summer jam. The production is exceptional, Thugga is cocky and confident, while Williams and Grande accentuate.

11. Jamiroquai, “Canned Heat”

💿 Synkronized 🏷 Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited • 📅 1999

Jamiroquai, Synkronized [📷: Sony]So, what do you do when the times get rough? Do you cry? Do you pray? Well, everybody has their own way of handling adversity, trial, and tribulation.  For 🎙 Jamiroquai, their approach changed on the 1999 hit, 🎵 “Canned Heat”. How so? Well, per 🎙 Jay Kay (awesome name, right?), “I used to put my faith in worship / But then my chance to get to heaven slipped…” Um, so, if it’s not prayer, what is Kay’s outlet – his fix for the bad times? Dancing, of course!

“Dance!

Nothing left for me to do but dance

Off these bad times I’m going through, just dance

Got canned heat in my heels, tonight, baby.”

Woo, not only does that philosophy sound like a vibe, listening to this gem from the band’s 1999 album, 💿 Synkronized is a total vibe. “Canned Heat” is marvelous.  It’s groovy as albeit, hearkening back to the disco of the 1970s.  Even though it’s throwback (even for 1999), it sounds fresh and hella enticing.  Those athletic strings mark one of the best instrumental features.  Of course, it’s hard to pick the best feature when you have to decide between so many utterly sublime parts – fat bass line, autopilot groove, again, those strings.  And, what about those lit vocals by Jay Kay? We should all embrace the philosophy (and the disco) of “Canned Heat!”
