11 Prayerful Pray Songs features songs by DeathbyRomy & Palaye Royale, Lil Peep, Samuel Saint, Scott Hoying, and Sister Janet Mead.
If you would, turn in your Bibles to Matthew 21:22. No Bible? No problem! Just read the scripture as follows: 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith. That was a word from the Word. The keyword is prayer, which also happens to be the keyword of this primarily secular playlist, 11 Prayerful Pray Songs.11 Prayerful Pray Songs follows up 11 Songs Where I Pray, The Prayers Go Up (2023). Even before that prayer-driven playlist, I had compiled prayer-centric lists including 5 Secular Songs About Prayer (2017) and 11 Secular Songs About Praying, Preaching & Baptism (2019). The criterion is simple: All songs must feature some form of the word pray, whether it’s pray, prayer, or praying. 11 Prayerful Pray Songs features songs by DeathbyRomy & Palaye Royale, Lil Peep, Samuel Saint, Scott Hoying, and Sister Janet Mead. So, without further ado, get down on your hands and knees and let’s pray! Or… just check out the songs on this list and skip the prayers. Your choice!

1. Scott Hoying, “PRAY”
“PRAY” » Scott Hoying » 2025
“But hey, have a little faith (Faith) / The pain’ll go away,” Scott Hoying sings on his 2025 single, “PRAY”. Pain is a hard thing to eradicate, with emotionally and psychologically charged pain being harder to overcome than physical pain in some respects. The Grammy winner asserts in the pre-chorus, “Even if it’s one step, two steps, three steps back / Maybe back’s the new on-track / Betcha didn’t think of that.” Can’t say that I have, Scott… Hoying and Toby Gad wrote and produced “PRAY”. As always, Scott is beastly on the vocals, showing off his beautiful, nuanced pipes. He also shows off ample personality in this thoughtfully written anthem that encourages living your truth. The gospel-infused pop musical backdrop doesn’t hurt either. Let all the gays rise to their feet and say, YASSS 🙌!
“I tried to pray (Pray) / Pray, pray, pray / But it only got stronger / Makin’ me wonder, what’s goin’ on here.” Hmm, what was Scott praying for, pray tell? He was praying the gay away… Ugh 😤. Unfortunately, Hoying was a victim of that horrible thing called conversion therapy, which does substantial harm and no good. As Hoying sings in the chorus, the therapy was a failure, and instead of becoming heterosexual, he remained or became even more gay 🌈. He continues singing, “I can’t wait for that day / When love can be free, and I can be me / Now that can be my version of therapy.” You better preach, Scotty! If you cannot be who you are meant to be, that makes for a miserable life. Life is fleeting, so who wants to feel trapped in a false narrative or repress who they are? Hoying provides more ear-catching lyrics. “Like my daddy said, ‘Toughen up’ / Rub some dirt in it, life gets rough,” he sings, adding, “One shot / Don’t go waste it on silly dreams / Like being what you ain’t supposed to be / ‘Cause hey, you gotta find your way (Which way?) / That’s why you gotta pray.” Amen… to being true to yourself and not living lies – be you, boo! One of the best moments comes in the outro, where Hoying asserts, “Everything turned out alright / ‘Cause I found the love of my life / We took a strut down the aisle / And we feelin’ perfectly fine.” Scott Hoying has delivered a hymn that the LGBTQ+ community and allies can get behind. Now, if we could only get everybody onboard with the prayers of “PRAY”, that would totally – wait for it – SLAY 💅!

2. Sister Janet Mead, “The Lord’s Prayer”
A Time To Sing » Southern Cross Music Pty Limited » 2002
“Our Father / Who art in heaven / Hallowed be Thy name / Thy kingdom come / Thy will be done / On earth as it is in heaven.” Amen! Believe it (and you should 👏) or not, those Biblical words were part of a top 10 hit on the pop charts. Christian music rarely crosses over sizably, but Australian Catholic nun Sister Janet Mead (1937 – 2022) took her pop/rock rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer” to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 😮. Mead also earned a Grammy nomination at the 17th Annual GRAMMY Awards for Best Inspirational Performance (Non-Classical). It should not be a shock that “The Lord’s Prayer” was Mead’s sole hit on the pop charts.
“The Lord’s Prayer” makes petitioning to God sound fun. It rocks 🤘! This is a rousing Christian rock track. It conveys the message of the scripture while also catching the ear. Janet Mead delivers a well-rounded vocal performance. She never over- nor under-sings, blessing us with her beautiful tone and bringing the tuneful melodies and timeless scriptures to life. The excerpted lyrics are the ‘chorus,’ recurring numerous times. Other parts of one of the most famous scriptures serve as distinct sections. “Gives us this day our daily bread / Forgive us our trespasses” (Matthew 6:11-12) craft the verse. The final part of The Lord’s Prayer, “Our Lord lead us not into temptation / But save us from evil / And the kingdom, the power / And the glory forever / Will be Yours” (Matthew 6:13), appears in the bridge. Sister Janet Mead ministered to many through her once-in-a-lifetime take on “The Lord’s Prayer”.

3. DeathbyRomy & Palaye Royale, “PRAY TO ME”
HOLLYWOOD FOREVER » DeathbyRomy » 2025
“Pray to me like Jesus / Worship me forever / When you’re at your weakest / I can be your savior.” Ooh-wee, it’s giving heresy, DeathbyRomy (Romy Flores), and Palaye Royale! The singer and rock band collaborate on “PRAY TO ME”, the religious imagery-laden single and penultimate track from Romy’s 2025 album, HOLLYWOOD FOREVER. Flores co-wrote the heavy, minor-key cut with Ally Duesbury and AWAY (Dan Alm). AWAY, Midoca, and Omri are credited as producers. The sound of “PRAY TO ME” is one of its best attributes blending traditional rock sounds with a sleek electronic palette. The love is dark in the hands of Romy and Palaye Royale vocalist Remington Leith.
DeathbyRomy performs the initial chorus (excerpted above), first verse, pre-chorus, and following chorus. With her powerful and expressive vocals and bold lyrics, she is unapologetic, setting the blasphemous tone. “Crucifix, three six, I’m a misfit / Blasphemous, plagued bitch with the sickness,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “Heaven’s Gate Kool-Aid when I’m mixin’.” In the pre-chorus, she asserts, “I’m your pain and I’m your pleasure / I’m the ode to your disaster.” Oh, snap! Palaye Royale (Remington) performs the second verse, continuing the blasphemy: “I bow down like a good disciple / Repent before me, I’ll show you the Bible.” They join forces in the pre-chorus, later singing collaboratively in the bridge (“Take my wings and tear them off / Tie my hands to the edge of the cross…”) and the epic final chorus, the first not sung exclusively by DeathbyRomy. An undisputed, hard-rocking bop, “PRAY TO ME” thrives thanks to strong vocal performances, hellish songwriting, tuneful melodies, and stellar production. Does repenting mean anything if you can’t resist listening to something blasphemous over and over? Haha.

4. Lil Peep, “Praying to the Sky”
Lil Peep; Part One » Death Note Music, LLC / AWAL Recordings America, Inc. » 2024
“You know it’s fucked when the pain feel nice.” True, Lil Peep (Gustav Åhr, 1996 – 2017) – that is indeed, fucked. The intriguing rapper and singer was a talent gone too soon 😢. In 2015, Åhr self-released his first mixtape, Lil Peep; Part One. In 2024, it was re-released posthumously. Lil Peep; Part One begins with a superb, four-minute-long track, “Praying to the Sky”. Åhr admitted, “I was on acid when I made ‘Praying to the sky.’” At the time “Praying to the Sky” was originally released in 2015, Lil Peep was 18, shy of his 19th birthday. He co-wrote “Praying to the Sky” with Eric Howden and producer, GREAF.
“Praying to the Sky” features a chill, enigmatic, yet moody instrumental. This backdrop perfectly complements Lil Peep’s musical approach and style. “Praying” radiates with cool energy. Peep delivers a captivating cadence and flow. It begins with the lengthy chorus, excerpted above. In this major section, he has plenty to say. “I’m tryna get you out my head tonight (Tonight) / I’m tryna get you out my fuckin’ life (Fuckin’ life, fight),” he raps, continuing, “Then we fucked, then she sucked me off twice / Then I left that bitch alone like I was right, fuckin’ right (Wrong).” Matters of the heart affect him, as does mental health and substance use (“I hear voices in my head, they tellin’ me to call it quit / I found some Xanax in my bed, I took that shit, went back to sleep”). There is a verse sandwiched between the two jam-packed choruses. His depression is troubling as he references cutting (“No, washin’ the blood from my wrist on the floor”), mortality (“Play this shit when they put me in a hole / For eternity, so they can reap what they sow”), and low self-esteem (“No, I don’t know what she be fuckin’ me for / Oh, I don’t know why you in love with me, ho”). An equally beautiful and depressing song, “Praying to the Sky” captures the giftedness and tragedy of a young artist who died as his career had just begun. “They gon’ miss me when I’m dead, I lay my head and rest in peace / I’m prayin’ to the sky, I don’t even know why, ayy.”

5. Tina Campbell, “Pray For Me”
“Pray For Me” » Gee Tree Creative / Red Alliance Media » 2024
“When saints start praying / Things start changing!” Amen! Tina Campbell (Trecina “Tina” Atkins-Campbell), one half of the beloved contemporary gospel sister duo, Mary Mary thanks those who took the time to pray for her on her encouraging, spirited single, “Pray For Me”. “Pray For Me” interpolates the gospel classic, “Somebody Prayed For Me” (“I’m so glad they prayed for me”) putting a fresh, contemporary R&B/hip-hop spin. The production is sleek and soulful.
“Went to the Lord on my behalf / Cause they knew what I needed / Even when I walked in the church / They knew I was depleted,” Tina sings in the first verse, continuing, “Made up their mind, gave up the time / To ask the Lord to help me.” The melody is tuneful, while the vocals are high-flying. Tina has always been able to not only ‘sing,’ but ‘sang.’ In the second verse, the theme is similar: “Called on Jesus all night long / Cause they knew about my struggle / Didn’t even matter / I was the reason I was in trouble…” Tina had some prayer warriors on her side, which was a blessing. In the chorus, with the help of awesome background vocals, Tina asserts, “(Pray for me) / Didn’t leave me there by myself / (Pray for me) / Asked Almighty to send some help.” Amen! Tina Campbell delivers an electrifying, uplifting performance on the must-hear, prayerful “Pray For Me”.

6. Coldplay, “WE PRAY” (Ft. Lil Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna & TINI)
Moon Music » Coldplay / Parlophone » 2024
“And so, we pray / For someone to come and show me the way / And so, we pray / For some shelter and some records to play.” Amen! Decorated British alt-rock collective Coldplay returned with their 10th studio album, Moon Music. Chris Martin and the boys bring prayers on “WE PRAY”. Coldplay enlists four unique guests on this faith-based single: British rapper Little Simz, Nigerian singer Burna Boy, Palestinian-Chilean singer, Elyanna, and Argentinian singer, TINI. “WE PRAY” features numerous credited songwriters. Bill Rahko, Daniel Green, ILYA, Max Martin, and Michael Ilbert produced. The instrumental backdrop is modern, rhythmic, and sleekly produced. The strings, when they enter the mix, and the groove are two of the best features. Fuel for the vocalists’ fire.
Following a prayerful intro, Martin sings the first verse. The prayer is ample: “I pray that I don’t give up, pray that I do my best / Pray that I can lift up, pray my brother is blessed / Praying for enough, pray for Virgilio wins.” The Virgilio reference is ultra-specific. Martin also sings on the chorus (excerpted at the top), joined at times by Little Simz and Burna Boy. Little Simz takes the reins in the second verse, dropping an uplifting verse asserting, “Pray I speak my truth and keep my sisters alive,” adding, “Pray when she looks at herself in the mirror / She sees a queen, see sees a goddess.” Thoughtful to the nth degree. Burna Boy performs the bridge, where he prayerfully “Keep a smiling face, only by His grace.” As for Elyanna and TINI, they appear in the final chorus, lending their vocal talents. All told, “WE PRAY” is an entertaining, socially conscious, and thoughtful pop record.

7. Jessie Murph, “Pray”
Drowning » Jessie Murph / Columbia » 2022
“I’ve never been colder,” Jessie Murph sings in the first verse of “Pray,” the 10th track on her 2022 album, Drowning. That sounds utterly chilly, Jessie! She adds, “Fuck the better, it’s only worse / Wouldn’t wish this on no one.” Murph is in a bad spot following perceived as love. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out, and she can’t seem to shake it. In the pre-chorus, she mentions running it back and working things out, but ultimately, it’s “Late at night, goin’ out my mind / Prayin’ that the sun don’t rise.” Oh, snap! In the chorus, despite her godawful depressed state, she tells her ex, as well as the listeners, “It’s somethin’ that I pray you’ll never know.” Although “Pray” is brief, running under two-and-a-half minutes in duration, it is potent and powerful. If you have experienced a relationship where things went south, and trying to rebound and recover was an epic failure, this record is relatable. Murph sings marvelously, whether it’s more legato lines or the rhythmic ones from the second verse. Her authenticity and sincerity go a long way. The songwriting is spot on, while the musical backdrop is striking. While we wish no pain on Jessie, her pain is, indeed, our listening pleasure. Oh, the schadenfreude of it all!

8. Samuel Saint, “Pray the Gay Away”
“Pray the Gay Away” » Samuel Saint » 2023
“You got to get down on your knees, now boy / And pray the gay away.” Homophobia and the sin of homosexuality are real, folks. Country singer-songwriter Samuel Saint captures it perfectly in his 2023 song, “Pray the Gay Away”. After his daddy found out he kissed another boy (🫢), he advised him to pray the gay away. Bad, narrow-minded advice, mind you, but, depending on where you live, and what church/religion you are a member of, it’s sadly, not far-fetched. Despite this useless advice, Saint makes the most of it with a memorable chorus for the ages:
“He said, you got to pray the gay away
Now, each and every day
You go to, let the Lord come inside you
Now God’s the only way
You got to give your life to Jesus
And stop dreaming about penis
You got to pray gay away
You got to pray gay away.”
Ooh-wee! Not stop dreaming about penis 😜! After his gay awakening, Samuel Saint still finds himself… gay. After joining his high school football team (football is such a masculine, man’s sport), he is enamored by “the quarterback,” who is “Tall and black.” But, suppressing those feelings and his teenage hormones, Saint instead sings his daddy’s anti-gay song. If football couldn’t un-gay him, surely the military in the third verse could! Ha! When referencing his bunk mate, he admits, “I could barely keep it in my pants / When he was wearing his beret / But I knew I had to fight it / Because Jesus wouldn’t like it.” Bummer! In the fourth and final verse, Sam is, unfortunately, a sad and lonely man, but he’s got Jesus… Samuel Saint delivers a fantastic satirical gay country song with “Pray the Gay Away”. His voice sounds superb, the melodies are tuneful, and the musical backdrop is countrified with southern gospel vibes (it’s that piano and those gospelized background vocals). The big takeaway is, live your truth – be who you are meant to be. Don’t become a sad, lonely man or woman who regrets not being true to oneself. The gay can’t be prayed away, nor should it be. Let that rainbow shine fearlessly and proudly 🌈 💅!

9. G-Eazy, “Pray for Me”
The Beautiful & Damned » RCA » 2017
“Talk to the man upstairs, hoping he answers my prayers.” Well, G-Eazy (Gerald Gillum), it seems you are petitioning the right source on “Pray for Me” 🙏. “Pray for Me” is the second track on Eazy’s 2017 album, The Beautiful & Damned. Backed by a haunting, spiritual-sounding instrumental produced by Nils, Boi-1da, and CuBeatz, Gillum expresses his concerns given the vices of fame, seeking prayer. In the chorus, excerpted above, he continues rapping, “Hollywood feel like the jungle, lions and tigers and bears / Pray for me, pray for me, pray for me, pray for me.” Woo! In the verses, he offers more specific examples of his devilish ways. “Yeah, I’ve been California dreaming / Turnt the fuck up for no reason, ayy (Eazy) / Treat a Wednesday like a weekend,” he spits, memorably adding, “These women, they plot, and they scheming / Do anything to get a hold of my semen / I’m flushing the rubber, you won’t get my children.” Damn! At least he’s honest regarding his issues with women. The second verse finds Eazy continuing to shed light on why he needs prayer. L.A., a place of opportunities, has proven itself to be bad for Gerald. “The Beautiful & Damned, pop another Xan / Was the Bulleit down, have to cool it down,” he raps, continuing, “Lost my mind, I won’t stop until it’s found / It’s way up there, I might have to pull it down.” How serious is G-Eazy regarding his vices? His sincerity is questionable within the context of the music he’s released throughout his career, but, at least he’s self-aware of potential destruction because of his choices on “Pray for Me.”

10. Andrea Bocelli & The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, “The Lord’s Prayer”
My Christmas » Sugar Srl » 2009
Many Christmas albums include a classic penned by Albert Hay Malotte, “The Lord’s Prayer”. “The Lord’s Prayer” is not strictly a holiday song, of course. Furthermore, the lyrics – the text – comes from of the most famous scriptures in the Bible, Psalms 23. This is Malotte’s best-known piece, covered by numerous musicians. Andrea Bocelli, assisted by The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, covers this faith-based gem on his multiplatinum Christmas album, My Christmas, released in 2009. The first voice(s) heard come from The Tabernacle Choir who sound incredibly warm and reverent (“Our Father / Which art in heaven / Hallowed be Thy name”). They set the tone sensationally. Also, setting the tone sensationally is the lovely instrumental arrangement, which includes an orchestra, piano, and organ. David Foster, producer extraordinaire, crafts a classy and refined backdrop.
When Bocelli enters the mix, his vocals are gorgeous. His tone – celestial to the nth degree. He reiterates the text sung by the choir, continuing the beloved Biblical scripture: “They kingdom come / Thy will be done / On Earth / As it is in heaven.” When Bocelli and choir sing together, the musical experience grows even more emotional, spiritual, holy. This occurs twice. The first is “Give us this day / Our daily bread,” and most memorably, the powerful ending: “For Thine / Is the kingdom / And the power / And the glory / Forever / Amen.” Andrea Bocelli and The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square shine on “The Lord’s Prayer”. Notably, Bocelli has also duetted on the Malotte classic alongside his handsome, talented son, Matteo Bocelli.

11. The Clark Sisters, “A Praying Spirit”
Count It All Joy / He Gave Me Nothing To Lose » Sound of Gospel » 2002
“Lord give me a praying spirit / A praying spirit / Lord help me to say yes (Yes Lord).” Ah, Ebernita Clark, better known as Twinkie Clark, composed a sensational gem for the iconic gospel collective, The Clark Sisters. “A Praying Spirit” finds the Detroit collective at their best, being true innovators in the gospel realm. Originally, “A Praying Spirit” appeared on their album, Count It All Joy. That album, and a second LP by the sisters, is now issued as Count It All Joy / He Gave Me Nothing To Lose. In “A Praying Spirit,” The Clark Sisters encourage petitioning, conversing, and praying to God consistently. “A praying spirit throughout the day / A praying spirit in every way,” the sole verse of “A Praying Spirit” goes, continuing, “A praying spirit that I might stay / A praying spirit lest I faint, oh Lord.” It’s all about the importance and power of prayer, truly leaning into and building that relationship with the Most High. Beyond the centerpiece, the chorus, and that thoughtful verse, “A Praying Spirit” features a rousing bridge, which emphasizes – wait for it – PRAYER. Furthermore, the outro provides more fuel to the fire of prayer. Prayer is the key of heaven, and The Clark Sisters ensure you understand, embrace, and don’t neglect it. Additionally, besides the emphasis on talking to God, “A Praying Spirit” features utterly sublime vocal harmonies and a striking harmonic progression. A beautiful, moving gospel song!
