Sometimes, you’ve gotta go BIG or go home! 11 More Really Awesome BIG Songs does just that! The keyword on this follow-up to 15 Really Awesome, Big Songs (2020) is… B-I-G, BIG! No synonyms for big are allowed on this one, though the likes of BIGGER is acceptable! 11 More Really Awesome BIG Songs features music courtesy of Arctic Monkeys, Elliott Norris, Jean Knight, Nicki Minaj, and Usher  among others.  So, without beating a dead horse 🥴, let’s jump right into this BIG ole songs!!!

1. Nicki Minaj, “Big Foot”

“Big Foot” // Republic // 2024

Nicki Minaj, Big Foot [📷: Republic]Nicki Minaj had to respond, right? RIGHT! For some context, Megan Thee Stallion ate on her diss track, “HISS”, which addressed several adversaries, including Minaj. With Nicki taking some a hit with Thee Stallion’s pitch perfect bars shading her and her husband, a response was necessary.  However, with the shady-titled “Big Foot”, Nicki forgot to add the seasoning or fully cook the ‘beef’ coming over as an insensitive bully. We all know that Nicki can rap her ass off, but sounds pressed on “Big Foot.” Does she believe she’s eating Thee Stallion up? Perhaps, but ultimately, it doesn’t hit.  She takes shots, but arguably, the bullets ricochet… “How you fuck your mother man when she die? / How you go on Gayle King and can’t cry?” she asserts, adding, “Swearin’ on your dead mother when you lie.” Ouch, Nicki… classless to be honest. Other infamous moments including, “Bad bitch, she like six foot (ooh), I call her Big Foot / The bitch feel off, I said, ‘Get up on your good foot,” referencing Megan getting shot in the foot, and generally insulting her.  Nicki also discredits Megan’s Grammy wins: “They got you all them Grammys, but your flow’s still a no / What a fiasco, Lupe.” One of the lowest blows is when she asserts, “Why the fuck is you humpin’ on a minor?” Sus, given Nicki’s husband is a convicted sex offender, her brother was convicted of sexual assault, and she took heat for giving a minor a lap dance… Perhaps the worst part of “Big Foot” is the outro, which is ODD AF.  “Big Foot” may aim BIG but was a big ole miss by one of the best rappers in the game.

2. Usher, “BIG”

Coming Home // mega / gamma. // 2024

Usher, Coming Home [📷: mega / gamma.]“Big” appears as the 11th track on Coming Home, the 2024 studio album by the handsome 😍, talented 🤩, Grammy-winning superstar, Usher.  On this funky, contemporary R&B joint, Usher does it B-I-G, all the time – no exceptions.  In the chorus, the centerpiece, he asserts, “You want somebody to take charge / You know I do it extra-large / When I was a kid, I would go to McDonald’s / I would never order the small / I would get it big.” Word! Of course, this bigness gets sexual – shocker! In the first verse, he sings, “If they only knew you had a ass like this / If you only knew you let me smash like this…” You can guarantee that the ass is… BIG! In the second verse, that “Big shit is poppin’” too – “B-I-G, I’m the CEO / M-V-P, worldwide, Black Beatle.” The point is on this colorful co-write with Theron Thomas and producer Phenom – Usher is doing BIG thangs!

3. Latto, “Big Energy”

777 // Streamcut / RCA // 2022

Latto, 777 [📷: Streamcut / RCA]“Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Yeah) / I can tell you got big dick energy (Uh-huh).” There is no doubt in the least that there’s ample energy on “Big Energy”, a breakout record for Latto. Released in 2021, “Big Energy” ultimately appeared on her 2022 album, 777.  So, how much energy did this BDE-heavy track have on the charts? Well, “Big Energy” peaked at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also spent a total of 51 weeks on the chart, which is HUGE (and fitting)! Featuring bold, sexual, and unapologetic lyrics, “Big Energy” has no shortage of personality.  Besides the lyrics (“I’ma bust it on a pole like Onyx (Ooh) / I’m just bein’ honest (Uh-huh) / Pussy juicy, Minute Maid (Oh) / But can’t do it one minute, man (Hell no)”), one thing that also cannot be failed to mention is the samples.  The big inspiration is  “Genius of Love”courtesy of Tom Tom Club.  Also, how about a little Mariah Carey featuring Ol’ Dirty Bastard with “Fantasy (Bad Boy Fantasy)”.  With such awesome ingredients – the lyrics, samples, production, personality, rhymes, and of course, big dick energy – it is unsurprising that “Big Energy” was the hit and surefire bop.  The chorus, of course, is the BIGGEST attraction, excerpted at the top and seen below in its ROBUST entirety:

“Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Yeah)

I can tell you got big dick energy (Uh-huh)

It ain’t too many niggas that can handle me (Yeah)

But I might let you try it off the Hennessy (Uh)

Make ‘em sing to this pussy like a melody (Make ’em sang)

And if your bitch ain’t right, I got the remedy (Ooh)

It ain’t too many niggas that can handle me (Ayy)

Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Ayy, ayy).”

    4. Elliott Norris, “Watch Out For the Big Boys”

“Watch out for the Big Boys” // Elliott Norris // 2023

Elliott Norris, Watch out for the Big Boys [📷: Elliott Norris]“He said he wants me but / I want a Frosty / Or maybe some gummies and steak.” Well, go get you something to eat then, Elliott Norris! You do you, boo! If a man is hungry, he should eat, right? Right! The excerpted, sung lines play right into the hands of the bigger guys – the husky, thick boys and bears! If you’re a twink, well, you better “Watch out for the Big Boys”, apparently! Should “Watch out for the Big Boys” be taken with a grain of salt? Of course, it should! That said, particularly in the LGBTQ community 🏳️‍🌈, how many songs do focus on bears and thicker boys? Few and far between.  Think about it.  The pool of songs is already considerably smaller. Then, do you really think the ‘less ideal’ body to many is getting the love it deserves? Ha! Elliott Norris, who is a thick boy himself, makes it clear that the big boys deserve to be shouted out.  Sure, the lyrics on this brief cut are tongue in cheek, but they are (1) entertaining and (2) pay ode to bigger bodies. Norris’ flow in the second verse is incredibly agile – that thick boy spits fast AF! But the lyrics to beat on “Watch out for the Big Boys” hail from the chorus: “Watch out for the big boys / Some call us the thick boys / Those don’t give a shit boys / Might steal yo chick boys.”  Enough said!

    5. Icandy, “Big Mad” (Ft. Flo Milli)

“Big Mad” // Records Label, LLC / Columbia // 2023

Icandy, Big Mad [📷: Records Label, LLC / Columbia]“Why you mad? (You a hater), what you mad for? (You a, you a hater) / Big mad (You a hater), you a mad ho (You a, you a hater).” WOO! Is there anything worse than being big mad? Rapper Icandy taps fellow rapper Flo Milli for “Big Mad”. As big mad as the haters may be, this big single runs under two minutes in duration. Basically, the big madness is in a compact package. It was produced by DC and David François. Notably, it features a hard-hitting beat, sampling the 2007, Lil Mama song, “Lip Gloss” (“Whatchu know ‘bout me”). Icandy drops the catchy, confident, infectious, and unapologetic chorus, excerpted above and continuing with the likes of, “Damn, I’m – damn, I’m lookin’ good, got your man stalkin’ / Pretty in the face, slim waist, bitch, I’m awesome.” Damn, she has no shortage of attitude and personality, does she? She doesn’t let up during her verse, mentioning her “Tight booty shorts on, baby got them buns out” and adding, “You hoes big mad, bitch, your nigga ain’t safe.” Noted.  Flo Milli, also fierce AF, contrasts Icandy in terms of the sound of her voice in the second verse. Thematically, Flo keeps the same energy: “He like wig bitches, I ain’t never been the type to ho,” and “Cryin’ on his phone, pussy ho, he never gave a fuck / Flew me overseas, the coochie, yeah, he ate it up.” Oh, snap! A fun, unapologetic AF record, “Big Mad” is bite-size, but that doesn’t stop the ladies from talking their she-it!

    6. Arctic Monkeys, “Big Ideas”

    The Car // Domino // 2022

Arctic Monkeys, The Car [📷: Domino]“I’ve conjured up wonderful things / The ballad of what could’ve been / Over and out / It’s been a thrill.”  Um, sure, Arctic Monkeys if you say so… “Big Ideas” is set in a minor key.  Interestingly, it’s in the same key as the song that precedes it on The Arctic Monkeys’ seventh studio album, The Car (“The Car”).  As always, that Alex Turner – well – he’s something! “Big Ideas,” which has no shortage of big ideas, features a sweet chorus, which is comprised of warm, lush strings.

“I had big ideas, the band were so excited

The kind you’d rather not share over the phone

But now, the orchestra’s got us all surrounded

And I cannot for the life of me remember how they go.”

The orchestration is superbly executed.  In the context of The Car, the chorus of “Big Ideas” marks one of the more accessible choruses of the album. One timbre that stands out is the combination of dirty guitars and smoother strings. Sigh, that’s one bigmusicalidea that excels!

    7. Taylor Swift, “Bigger Than the Whole Sky”

    Midnights // Taylor Swift // 2022

Taylor Swift, Midnights [📷: Taylor Swift]“I’ve got a lot to live without / I’m never gonna meet / What could’ve been, would’ve been / what should’ve been you.” Those lyrics are excerpted from the Midnights bonus cut, “Bigger Than The Whole Sky”, the 15th track. Here, Taylor Swift recalls some sort of loss, that’s open to interpretation. As always, the Grammy winning singer/songwriter’s pen is sharp – fierce!  “Salt streams out my eyes and into my ears,” Swift sings in the first verse, adding, “Every single thing I thought becomes sick with sadness / ‘Cause it’s all over now, all out to sea.” Dang, that’s sad 😢.  Taylor complements the lyrics in the first verse with those in the second: “Every single thing to come has turned into ashes.” Sounds morbid, which, again makes the loss seem subject to interpretation. Of course, the centerpiece of this beautiful record, produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff is the chorus.  Here, Swift makes the assertion that “You were bigger than the whole sky / You were more than just a short time.” The big question is who is the You? What there is no doubt about is how awesome “Bigger Than The Whole Sky” truly is.

    8. David Guetta, Ayra Starr & Lil Durk, “Big FU”

“Big FU” // Warner Music UK Limited // 2023

David Guetta, Ayra Starr & Lil Durk, Big FU [📷: Warner Music UK Limited]“Send a big ‘Fuck you’ to my replacement / I see you’re someone else’s favorite now.” Well, 💩, the 💣s are flying aren’t they? And by bombs, I mean f-bombs.  That said, when the name of the single is “Big FU”, what do you expect. This big fuck you comes at the hands of French DJ/producer extraordinaire David Guetta, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, and Chicago rapper, Lil Durk. Perhaps the profanity keeps it from being an ‘at work’ vibe, but all in all, “Big FU” is fun.  Guetta and Johnny Goldstein give us slick production with the groove, keys, and synths. Ayra Starr impresses with her deep, smooth vocals.  Her tone is gorgeous, while the vocal production is superb as well. “I notice my key doesn’t fit in your lock / And you’re blockin’ my calls (My calls),” she sings in the first verse, adding, “I’m happy to see that you finally got / Everything that you want.”  Of course, the crème de la crème is the catchy chorus, with its big FU and all:

“Send a big ‘Fuck you’ to my replacement

    I see you’re someone else’s favorite now

In m-my own mind, I might be crazy

I swear to God that I’m not hating, no…”

Lil Durk arrives in the second verse, providing a fine melodic delivery. He contrasts Starr, yet also complements her: “Pass me a cup, I don’t even drink, but I’m gettin’ drunk / I don’t even smoke, pass me a blunt, I want a puff / You can’t stop me, you gotta block me ‘cause I’m turnt up…” All in all, “Big FU”,  is a vibe.

    9. Jean Knight, “Mr. Big Stuff”

Mr. Big Stuff // Fantasy Inc. // 1971

Jean Knight, Mr. Big Stuff [📷: Fantasy, Inc.]“Mr. Big Stuff / Who do you think you are? / Mr. Big Stuff / You’re never gonna get my love.” WOO! The late, great New Orleans soul singer Jean Knight told y’all arrogant, overconfident dudes that you don’t have a chance with her on “Mr. Big Stuff”. She is NOT impressed! While Knight charted a few other songs on the pop charts, “Mr. Big Stuff,” which appears on her 1971 album, Mr. Big Stuff, marked her sole top-10 hit. How well did this big single perform? Oh, it only peaked at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971.  Furthermore, Knight was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female at the 14th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Oh, we’re not done with accolades yet! In 1996, “Mr. Big Stuff” was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Sure, Mr. Big Stuff thought he was the sugar honey iced tea, but it was Knight’s single that earned those honors!

So, who penned “Mr. Big Stuff,” one of the greatest, funkiest soul records of all time? That would be Carol Washington, Joseph Broussard, and Ralph Williams. Producing this masterpiece is the late, iconic New Orleans composer/arranger/bandleader/producer, Wardell Quezerque. Quezerque turns up the funk with the lit groove, marvelous rhythm guitar, robust bass line, and those epic, epic horns, WOO! That said, the key piece of “Mr. Big Stuff” is none other than Knight, who oozes with attitude, personality, and soul.  Her vocals are playful and commanding. The backing vocals amplify her lead, adding to the sassy, feminine vibes. Basically, Knight doesn’t have to settle for just any man, and he can’t woo her with material things. “I’d rather give my love to a poor guy that has a love that’s true / Than to be fooled around and get hurt by you.” WORD! “Mr. Big Stuff” was indeed one of soul’s BIG, BIG hits.  Check out Who Sampled – this one is a popular, popular sample.

    10. BROCKHAMPTON, “Big Pussy”

THE FAMILY // Question Everything, Inc. / RCA // 2022

BROCKHAMPTON, THE FAMILY [📷: Question Everything, Inc. / RCA]“This shit a classic, ain’t even been out a week.” Woo! Now that’s sheer confidence, Kevin Abstract!  Abstract takes the reins on “Big Pussy” (meow!), the promo single from the final BROCKHAMPTON album, THE FAMILY.  By taking the reins, I mean that only Abstract performs on the single. Nick Velez and bearface produce this wild as fuck track. The most prominent sample from “Big Pussy” is “Hustlin’”by Smoothe da Hustler.  That said, the intro of the record samples a punk record, introducing the titular lyric: “Fuck you / Fuck you, come up here then / Oh, wow, big pussy.”  Beyond that, “Big Pussy” gets weird quickly, with a blend of punk, jazzy, and old-school hip-hop vibes. Abstract keeps the same energy with two unapologetic, gives no flying fucks verses. It’s worth noting that both verses have two entirely different backdrops, adding to the uniqueness of this joint.  Some of the highlights include Abstract confirming the final studio album (“The group is over without being on the album”), fulfilling recording expectations (“the label needed thirty-five minutes of music”), and, for the millionth time, affirming he’s a proud gay, black rapper (“It’s the true shit, faggot nigga out of Houston”). It doesn’t stop there, of course, but one gets the most out of “Big Pussy” by listening and experiencing it for yourself.  While “Big Pussy” is left field to the nth degree, I appreciate the ambition, as well as Kevin, being true to himself – not giving a fizzuck.

    11. Mahalia Jackson, “Somebody Bigger Than You and I”

    I Believe // Columbia // 1960

Mahalia Jackson, I Believe [📷: Columbia]“Who made the mountains? Who made the trees? / Who made the rivers flow to the see?” legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson sings on the moving faith-based ballad, “Somebody Bigger Than You and I”.  “Somebody Bigger Than You and I” appears on Jackson’s 1960 album, I Believe. Penned by Johnny Lange, Hy Heath, and Sonny Burke, Jackson authentically brings the writers’ poetic lyrics to life. She continues singing in the first verse, “Who hung the moon in a starry sky? / Somebody bigger than you and I.” Of course, that somebody bigger than you and I refers to God.  The second verse, Jackson continues to ask questions about all of the miraculous things God does without specifically naming Him.  By the bridge, He is the pronoun, making it clear (if there was ever any doubt), this uplifting record pays ode to God. “He lights the way when the road is long / And He’ll keep you company,” Jackson sings, adding, “He walks beside you just like He walks with me.” Accompanied by orchestra and choir, alongside Jackson’s once-in-a-lifetime, anointed pipes, “Somebody Bigger Than You and I” is truly special.  Notably, other late, great icons, Elvis Presley and Whitney Houston, recorded covers on How Great Thou Art (1967) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996) respectively.
