keep it in the vaultThere are many more KEEP songs, mind you, but we’ll – I’ll – keep this list short, with a strong possibility of a second volume.  Until then, 🎧 11 Fabulous Songs You’ll KEEP Spinning features music courtesy of 🎙 BRONSON, 🎙 Dan + Shay, 🎙 Future, 🎙 Harry Styles, and 🎙 Michael McDonald among others.  So, prepare to keep spinning these 11 fab songs for a long-long time!

1. Future, “Keep It Burnin” (Ft. Kanye West)

💿 I NEVER LIKED YOU🏷 Epic • 📅 2022

Future, I Never Liked You [📷: Epic]“Cross me so much, I got nails in my hand / City on fire.” Ooh, wee, Ye – 🎙 Kanye West that is! 🎙 Future taps his fellow 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper for the third song from his highly successful 2022 album (💿 I NEVER LIKED YOU), 🎵 “Keep It Burnin”. “Keep It Burnin” was produced by 🎛 ATL Jacob, who gives Pluto and Kanye a lit 🔥 backdrop to work with.

West gets some great parts in “Keep It Burnin,” beginning with the ‘Biblical’ chorus.  Ye also delivers an interesting first verse, which features the eyebrow-raising lyric, “When you run for ’24, I bet your spouse gon’ be with you.” That’s disturbing, shady, and honestly, West being true to self.  It’s also not the only time he says it – it reappears in the third verse, slightly altered. Also in that same verse, he asserts, “Testin’ my faith and I fell in a trance.”  Moving on, this is Future’s track after all, and he gives us, um, well, sex, money, violence, drug – typical stuff honestly.  One thing’s for sure: “Money like sage in my house, keep it burnin’.” Woo!

2. BRONSON, “KEEP MOVING”

💿 BRONSON🏷 Foreign Family Collective LLC / Ninja Tune • 📅 2020

Bronson, Bronson [📷: Foreign Family Collective LLC / Ninja Tune]“Go ahead / Keep moving / Go ahead / Don’t be afraid / Yeah, okay, blackout.” What happens when you put two electronic music acts – 🎙 ODESZA and 🎙 Golden Features – together? Why, 🎙 BRONSON, of course! What, did you think I was going to say something different? BRONSON released their self-titled album in the midst of COVID-19, 2020.  One of the songs that truly stood out is the ninth track, 🎵 “KEEP MOVING.”  Mostly instrumental, “KEEP MOVING” is incredibly compelling – a surefire bop.

So, what makes “KEEP MOVING” such a vibe? It’s simple, folks.  The groove is electrifying, which is the expectation from electronic music producers.  Furthermore, the synths are colorful and ear-catching, with no shortage of rhythm.  Essentially, this is more than four minutes of musical excellence, with the few lyrics only amplifying the experience (“I can see how it moves / Don’t be afraid / I can see how it moves / Blackout again”).

3. Harry Styles, “Keep Driving”

💿 Harry’s House🏷 Columbia • 📅 2022

Harry Styles, Harry's House [📷 : Columbia]💿 Harry’s House,  is an inviting place to be – musically speaking, of course! 🏆 Grammy-winning pop musician 🎙 Harry Styles brings the heat on his third LP, arguably his best yet.  With no shortage of gems, one of the better songs is 🎵 “Keep Driving.”

“A small concern with how the engine sounds

We held darkness in withheld clouds

I would ask, ‘Should we just keep driving?’”

“Keep Driving” keeps things short but sweet. Honestly, in some ways, “Keep Driving” is one of the deeper songs of Harry’s House. In the chorus, Styles asks a valid question: “Should we just keep driving?” Throughout, this question seems to be tied with love as well as various happenings in life both uncomplicated and tumultuous (“Maple syrup, coffee / Pancakes for two / Hashbrown, egg yolk / I will always love you”).  Worth shouting out is the bridge section – “Cocaine, side boob.”

4. Drake, “Keep the Family Close”

💿 Views 🏷 Young Money Entertainment / Cash Money 📅 2016

Drake, Views [📷: Cash Money]“All of my ‘let’s just be friends’ are friends I don’t have any more / How do you not check on me when things go wrong / Guess I should’ve tried to keep my family closer…” Lyrically, sounds very 🎙 Drake-like if I do say so myself.  🎵 “Keep the Family Close” appears as the opener on the 🏆 Grammy-winning Canadian rapper/singer’s humongous 2016 album, 💿 Views.

“Keep the Family Close” kicks things off melodically, in Drake’s emo/R&B persona. It’s a familiar sound, but Drizzy is true to self.  Lyrically, he just doesn’t trust HER anymore, hence why he asserts, “I can’t depend on you anymore.” A girl doesn’t supplant family or close friends, at least a girl that’s not dedicated. Perhaps “Keep the Family Close” isn’t an epic, groundbreaking opener where Views is concerned, nor is it the top of Drake’s catalog, but he clearly articulates his point, and you’ve gotta dig the lush production (🎛 Maneesh).

5. Michael McDonald, “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”

💿 If That’s What It Takes 🏷 Warner • 📅 1982

Michael McDonald, If That's What It Takes [📷: Warner]“I keep forgettin’ we’re not in love anymore / I keep forgettin’ things will never be the same again.” 🎙 Michael McDonald had a successful run as a member of 🎙 Doobie Brothers, an iconic, soft-rock, pop-soul collective. He also experienced a successful run as a solo artist beginning with his first and best studio album, 💿 If That’s What It Takes.  The crown jewel of his 1982, gold-certified LP is 🎵 “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”. “I Keep Forgettin’” was a pop hit, peaking at no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, his most successful solo single.

“I Keep Forgettin’” is an exceptional example of sound songwriting, period (McDonald, 🎼 ✍ Ed Sanford, 🎼 ✍ Jerry Leiber, and 🎼 ✍ Mike Stoller). The lyrics are strong, but also, the crossover appeal is what really stands out.  McDonald lies somewhere in the rock/pop/soul sphere, which makes him appeal to multiple audiences.  Thematically, McDonald is struggling with a break-up.  Sure, we’ve heard ‘this song and dance’ many times but it never grows old.  Clearly, McDonald hates that things have ended, and he isn’t coping well.  In the bridge, he asserts, “Don’t say that, don’t say that, don’t say that / I know you’re not mine anymore-anymore-anytime / But tell me how come I…” Basically, like all of us who have broken up with someone, you have to work through it, sigh.

6. Rex Orange County, “Keep It Up”

💿 Who Cares?  🏷 Rex Orange County / Sony Music Entertainment • 🗓 2022

Rex Orange County, Who Cares? [📷: Rex Orange County / Sony Music Entertainment]🎙 Rex Orange Country (Alex O’Connor) returns much improved on 💿 Who Cares?, an album filled with reflection, introspection, matters of the heart, self-deprecation, and ultimately, arriving at a better place regarding mental health.  One of the best songs on his third LP is the opener,  🎵 “Keep it Up.”

“Keep it up and go on / You’re only holding out for what you want.” “Keep it Up” commences Who Cares? distinctly with lush strings, giving off indie/vintage pop vibes.  Following the gorgeous introduction, “Keep it Up” settles in with a sound groove, keys, and emphasis placed on O’Connor’s voice.  He delivers a memorable chorus that is encouraging and uplifting. “You no longer owe the strangers,” he asserts, adding, “It’s enough, it’s enough.” Rex Orange County makes a valid point about fame and far broader, appeasing others.

7. ur pretty, “Keep Riding Me”

🎵 “Keep Riding Me” • 🏷 ur pretty • 📅 2021

Ur pretty, “Keep Riding Me” [📷: ur pretty]Four words: “Just keep riding me.” How about six words: “Just keep on fucking me deep.” Now that is sexual AF, NO CAP! 🎙 ur pretty (🎙 Jake Hill) intended the lyrics to involve those private parts.  Furthermore, 🎵 “Keep Riding Me” doesn’t go straight – it’s G-A-Y.  “I can’t think straight when I look into your eyes,” Hill sings on the first verse, later adding, “Yeah, your mustache tickles my nut sack, baby.” Wow – TMI!  It doesn’t stop there, folks, on this sub-two-and-a-half-minute joint! “You got a way with your words and a big fat cock.”

“Flip me over, beat my meat up while you pound it.” Holy shit! The lyrics are ‘something else’ to say the least – UNDERSTATEMENT.  That said, in this case, they should be taken with a grain of salt.  “Keep Riding Me” feels less an ode to male-on-male love than, say, pop-punk humor. Regardless, Hill serves up some compelling vocals.  His best moment comes by way of the risqué chorus, which is sexed-up to the nth degree but also, entertaining:

“He spreads my cheeks, and he makes me scream

He’s my number one daddy, gotta make him cream inside of me

Just keep riding me

When I’m slurping him down, it’s my favorite sound

You let out a little moan, what a beautiful tone

So softly, just keep riding me.”

8. Khalid, “Keep Me”

💿 American Teen 🏷 RCA • 📅 2017

Khalid, American Teen [📷: RCA]“Roses were your favorite flower / And I couldn’t stand the scent…” Oh my, 🎙 Khalid – seems like a compatibility issue.  The question is, is it a deal breaker? “But if it’s what it takes to put a smile on your face / I guess I’ll deal with it.”  Well, there’s your answer folks.  The roses are NOT a deal breaker. Worth noting, however, that the relationship between the two is actually over. Hmm, so what’s Khalid’s angle on 🎵 “Keep Me” from his 2017 debut album, 💿 American Teen?

On “Keep Me,” the 🏆 Grammy-nominated singer seemed willing to do anything to be with her.  To reiterate, he cites their differences, admitting, “I sucked it up because I wanted to be more than friends.”  This thoughtful record raises legitimate conversation about the compromises and sacrifices one must make to be in love.  Now that the relationship is over, Khalid wants things to be as they were:

“You should walk away with me

In Your heart

Keep me in your mind

You don’t have to speak

Of our past, just

Keep me in your life

Keep me alive.”

9. Kanye West, “Keep My Spirit Alive” (Ft. Westside Gunn, & Conway the Machine)

💿 Donda 🏷 Def Jam • 🗓 2021

Kanye West, Donda [📷: Def Jam]“More than anything / You can take it all, but the Lord on my side,” Kanye West sings in the chorus of 🎵 “Keep My Spirit Alive,” a welcome moment from his 10th studio album, 💿 Donda. He continues, singing, “Spirit won’t die, die / Oh, oh, my life / Is in Hands, so I don’t stress, I pray and strategize.” “Keep My Spirit Alive” appears as the 16th track on the 27-track juggernaut.  The 🏆 Grammy-winner is joined by two of his contemporaries: 🎙 Westside Gunn, and 🎙 Conway the Machine.

“Keep My Spirit Alive” is produced by West, with plenty additional cooks in the kitchen:  🎛 BoogzDaBeast, 🎛 Ojivolta, 🎛 FNZ, 🎛 Dem Jointz, 🎛 Rico Nichols, and 🎛 Darius Woodley – WOO! Westside Gunn (“Hundred-round drum didn’t jam when my shooter tried to spray it, thank God (Thank God)”) and Conway the Machine (“No weapon formed against me ‘cause I’m covered in the blood / Layin’ in the hospital when I got shot, fam”) don’t disappoint, dropping the first and second verses respectively. In addition to his melodic chorus, West appears in the third verse. During that verse, he alludes to 🎦 Black Panther and God’s mercy, omniscience, and wonder-working power (“Give it all to God and let Jesus reimburse you”). Amen!

10. Dan + Shay, “Keeping Score (Ft. Kelly Clarkson)

💿🏷 Warner Music Nashville • 📅 2018

Dan + Shay, Dan + Shay [📷: Warner Nashville]“Someday we’re gonna blink twice, say it happens like that / How much money we saved up for the time that we gave up / Well, it’ll all just be math…” 🎵 “Keeping Score” marks one of the best songs from 💿 Dan + Shay, the third studio album by 🏆 Grammy-winning country duo, 🎙 Dan + Shay (🎙 Dan Smyers and 🎙 Shay Mooney). “Keeping Score” commences relatively chill characterized by smooth piano, rhythmic drums, and a dash of pedal steel.  It’s clear from the jump that D + S is going to bless us with their balladry.

That’s what goes down. Dan + Shay deliver beautiful and dynamic, high-flying vocals.  They don’t do so alone as they are joined by fellow 🏆 Grammy winner, 🎙 Kelly Clarkson.  Clarkson, in all her glory, joins them on the choruses, further amplifying the feels.

“‘Cause I know I’m only human

Don’t know how many sunsets I got left

And I don’t wanna ruin

This moment by wondering what comes next

I just want to love you like it’s all I’m living for

Hold you close, enjoy you more

And spend less time keeping score.”

The chorus is nothing short of magnificent from a vocal standpoint.  Furthermore, it’s a high watermark in regard to songwriting.

11. Fleet Foxes, “If You Need To, Keep Time on Me”

💿 Crack-Up 🏷 Nonesuch 📅 2017

Fleet Foxes, Crack-Up [📷: Nonesuch]🎙 Robin Pecknold and 🎙 Fleet Foxes delivered one of the most complex albums of 2017 with 💿 Crack-Up.  As demanding as their 2017 comeback LP was, it was also quite rewarding. Crack-Up  yielded marvelous moments including 🎵 “I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar,” 🎵 “Third of May / Ōdaigahara,” and the KEEP song at hand, 🎵 “If You Need To, Keep Time on Me.”

“If You Need To, Keep Time on Me” ranks among the more accessible songs from Crack-Up.  Even being more accessible, it retains the superb songwriting that characterizes the album.  Pecknold offers a hint at the onset as to what the song is about with a particular date: January 20, 2017.  That was the day that Donald J. Trump officially became the 45th President of the United States. Pecknold sings from the jump: “How could it all fall in one day? / Were we too sure of the sun?” Hmm, I’ll leave it at that…
