1. Sexyy Red, “Get It Sexyy”
In Sexyy We Trust // Open Shift / gamma. // 2024
“Slim, thick, chrome skin / 5’5”, this bitch a ten (Yeah) / Hair done, bills paid / Catch me slidin’ in a Benz…” Sexyy Red is something else! Ultimately, it’s how unapologetic and outlandish the rapper is that makes her interesting, even if the bars she spits lack transcendence. There are far better and more talented rappers, but songs that ‘go stupid’ like “Get It Sexyy” from her 2024 mixtape, In Sexyy We Trust, are entertaining to listen to. Tay Keith and Jake Fridkis produced. They give her a malicious, minor-key backdrop that perfectly fuels her fire. She’s true to herself with simple, highly sexual bars, and ample confidence. Beyond the chorus (excerpted above), Sexyy Red delivers a sole verse with no shortage of wild bars. “Yeah, boy, you know this ass super fat (I ain’t lyin’, though),” she brags, continuing, “Fuck me good, I’m throwin’ that shit back (I’m his favorite hoe).” There’s more, with the likes of “Big Sexy blood, love the hoes / Bounce that ass, touch them toes / Booty shorts, coochie swoll / Thong all up my booty hole.” Woo! She also manages to flip a nursery rhyme and make it, ratchet: “Little miss Sexyy walkin’ down the street (Beep beep) / I don’t know what to do ‘cause the niggas after me (Yeah, yeah).” Like many of her other records, there is clapping because why not? As ‘stupid’ as “Get It Sexxy” goes, it has some enjoyable, melodic moments in the backdrop. Even though it lacks class and depth, and has no shame, it’s incredibly entertaining.

2. BossMan Dlow, “Get In With Me”
Mr Beat The Road // Alamo / Sony Music Entertainment // 2024
“I’m in that thing shiftin’ and I’m lane-switchin’ (Yoom) / Bitch, it’s Big Za, I’ma stand on straight business (Big Za).” WOO! Florida rapper BossMan Dlow (Devante McCreary) brings the heat with his infectious, two-minute rap banger, “Get In With Me.” Despite not reaching the top 40 on the pop charts (number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100), “Get In With Me” was certified platinum. The single is the fifth track from the rapper’s gold-certified mixtape, Mr Beat The Road. “Get In With Me” features banging production work courtesy of Dxntemadeit. The beat hits hard in this minor-key joint. BossMan Dlow exhibits a confident and compelling flow, eating the beat up! “Uh, dunkin’ on niggas’ ass like Blake Griffin / He keep talkin’, bro gon’ leave his face missing.” Beyond the verse, the chorus goes particularly hard:
“I was bad as fuck in school, now I’m tryna dodge a sentence
Just walked out the Lanvin store, pair of shoes, twelve-fifty
You wanna boss up your life? All you gotta do is get in with me
I don’t even pay to get in the club, they know I’m a walkin’ ticket…”
BossMan Dlow is the sugar honey iced tea – better get in with him!

3. Olivia Rodrigo, “get him back!”
GUTS // Olivia Rodrigo / Geffen // 2023
Is there any doubt that 20-year-old Grammy-winning pop artist Olivia Rodrigo has GUTS? NOPE! Her sophomore album is arguably even better than her debut. Among the highlights is the sensational “get him back!”. You know when those drumstick taps kick things off (courtesy of Alexander 23) that this song is sure to be a banger. Rodrigo truly amps up the personality. The rhythmic chanted vocals in the verses help showcase a big-time attitude. Exhibit A: “He said he’s six-foot-two, and I’m like, ‘Dude, nice try.’” While there are some parallels to other songs from GUTS, as well as her career up to this point, “get him back!” sounds distinctly different, which is a win. You can’t mention this bop without highlighting that sung chorus which contrasts the verses: “I wanna get him back / I wanna make him really jealous, wanna make him feel bad.” WORD!

4. Daft Punk, “Get Lucky” (Ft. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers)
Random Access Memories // Daft Life Limited / Columbia // 2013
“She’s up all night ‘til the sun / I’m up all night to get some.” Oh, snap
! “She’s up all night for good fun / I’m up all night to get lucky.”
Who doesn’t love a feel-good, sensual jam? That’s exactly what French duo Daft Punk (Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter), assisted by Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, gave us with “Get Lucky”. Williams sings those horny, thirsty lyrics from the crowning achievement of the multiplatinum album, Random Access Memories. Random Access Memories won Grammys for Album of The Year and Best Dance/Electronica Album. “Get Lucky” won two Grammys: Record Of The Year and Best Pop Duo / Group Performance. Daft Punk’s first massive hit, “Get Lucky” peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been certified octuple platinum as of publication.
The ‘sex on the track’ catches the ears. Pharrell excels at the role of a guy looking to get laid – NSA, baby! “What is this I’m feeling?” he asks in the second verse, continuing, “If you wanna leave, I’m with it, uh-huh.” The with-it-ness is ‘doing it’ in case you need clarification. They’re dancing, partying, and living it up, so why not throw in some sex? Daft Punk joins the action too, vocoder intact, repeating, “We’re up all night to get lucky.” YEAH! As fun as the sex angle is on “Get Lucky,” the musicianship supersedes. Daft Punk, Williams, and Rodgers composed this enduring bop. Daft Punk and Rodgers produced. Williams sounds fabulous in handling lead vocals. Rodgers shines on the guitar. Daft Punk, as well as the supporting cast of instrumentalists, put in serious work. Sure, a one-night stand/casual sex isn’t a refined musical theme, but, the sheer musical magnificence of “Get Lucky” is refined, and undeniable.

5. SZA, “Nobody Gets Me”
SOS Deluxe: LANA // Top Dawg Entertainment / RCA // 2024
“How am I supposed to tell you / I don’t wanna see you with anyone, but me / Nobody gets me like you.” On “Nobody Gets Me,” SZA is heartbroken about the end of her relationship. The Grammy-winning musician attempts to atone by having sex with other guys – “Hurry now, baby, stick it in / ‘Fore the memories get to kickin’ in” – but ultimately, she understands that nobody else feels right for her other than her ex. “I pretend when I’m with a man, it’s you.” SZA adored him and now he is out of the picture. Beyond the relatable narrative and lyrics from the 29th track from SOS Deluxe: LANA, the music is a selling point too. The rhythmic guitar accompaniment is a nice touch, giving the record a simple, confessional feel. This is R&B with pop sensibilities. The melody is tuneful throughout, particularly in the chorus where her vocals utterly slay.

6. Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz, “Get Low” (Ft. Ying Yang Twins)
Kings Of Crunk // The Orchard // 2002
“3-6-9, damn, she fine / I’m hopin’ she can sock it to me one more time / And roll, get low (get low) / Get low (Get low), get low (Get low, yay, yay).” Hot damn! Tear the club up! Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz, assisted by Ying Yang Twins, constructed an unforgettable gem with “Get Low”. Rap it with me:
“To the window (To the window)
To the wall. (To the wall)
‘Til sweat drip down my balls (My balls)
‘Til all these bitches crawl (Crawl)
‘Til all skeet-skeet, motherfucker (Motherfucker)
‘Til all skeet-skeet, goddamn (A-goddamn)
‘Til all skeet-skeet, motherfucker (Motherfucker)
‘Til all skeet-skeet, goddamn (A-goddamn).”
That beloved chorus, performed by Kaine, D-Roc, and Lil Jon (Jonathan Smith) never fails to get me hyped up. “Get Low” is the 17th track on Lil Jon’s double platinum, 2002 album, Kings of Crunk. It reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2003. In addition to being credited as a writer, Lil Jon produced this highlight of the crunk era. A syncopated beat and repetitive, slinky-sounding synths highlight the accompaniment.
The five-and-a-half-minute-long “Get Low” commences with an infectious intro. The chorus, the first major section of the song, excerpted above, is one the most memorable of the 2000s. The lyrics throughout “Get Low” are raunchy as fuck (see what I did there). “Shawty crunk, so fresh, so clean / Can she fuck? That question been harassing me,” Kaine spits in the first verse. D-Roc brings his raunch to the second verse: “Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz with me / And we all like to see ass and titties / Now bring your ass over here, ho…” There’s more where that shit came from! In the third verse, Lil Jon encourages her to “Drop that ass to the floor,” “Twerk that ass, ayy, shake it fast, ayy,” “Pop that ass to the left and the right,” “Back it up,” and “Wiggle with it.” Lil’ Bo gets into the mix later, keeping things naughty. Timeless to the nth degree, “Get Low” never grows old. It is one of the greatest ass-shaking anthems of all time, no cap!

7. Doja Cat, “Get Into It (Yuh)”
Planet Her // Kemosabe / RCA // 2021
“Call him Ed Sheeran, he in love with my body.” To be fair, Ed Sheeran sang, “I’m in love with the shape of you”. But, this isn’t about our favorite, tatted, ginger pop singer/songwriter. This is about Grammy-winning rapper/singer Doja Cat, who never seems to be short on personality. A prime example where Amala Dlamini shows off that big personality is “Get Into It (Yuh),” the fourth track from her 2021 album, Planet Her. The song is brief, but the performance is frisky, nonsensical, and outlandish. “Y’all need to get into it like a piranha / Y’all need to get into my drip like y’all need water,” she sings in the second verse, adding, “I mean, it’s only head to toe Balenciaga / I mean, y’all bitches better ‘yuh’ like Ariana.” Wow! The chorus is particularly wild: “If you go to church / Get into it, yuh / If she ain’t got a butt / Fuck it, get into it, yuh.” Holy moly! Dlamini pays ode to Nicki Minaj in the outro. Y2K and Sully put it work behind the boards. “Get Into It (Yuh)” reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.

8. Billie Eilish, “Getting Older”
Happier Than Ever // Darkroom / Interscope // 2021
“Things I once enjoyed / Just keep me employed now.” Those lyrics are both relatable to anybody and specific to Academy and Grammy Award-winning musician Billie Eilish. Eilish commences her sophomore album, Happier Than Ever, with “Getting Older.” In “Older,” she reflects on how things have changed as she matures and experiences life. This well-produced number (FINNEAS is a beast, as always) sets the tone for Happier Than Ever. Hard to believe the album failed to win her additional Grammys… Notably, she references the title (“I’m happier than ever, at least that’s my endeavor”), as well as opens up about abuse (“(Wasn’t my decision) To be abused”) and trauma. As always, Eilish cooks.

9. Missy Elliott, “Get Ur Freak On”
Miss E… So Addictive // Elektra Entertainment Group, Inc. // 2001
“Headbanger / Hit me /… Give me some new shit!” Woo! “Get Ur Freak On” is one of the premiere songs by four-time Grammy winner Missy Elliott. Fun fact: “Get Ur Freak On” earned Elliott her first Grammy at the 44th Annual GRAMMY Awards for Best Rap Solo Performance. Yay! Get it, girl! Oddly, it was also nominated for Best R&B Song
. Go figure! It is the fifth track from her platinum-certified third studio album, Miss E… So Addictive. “Get Ur Freak On” peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified multiplatinum by the RIAA in May 2023. Elliott and the one-and-only Timbaland produced this infectious rap banger (“Me and Timbaland been hot since twenty years ago”). Both artists were ‘forward thinkers’ when it came to their music.
The production bangs. “Get Ur Freak On” sounded futuristic when released and remains ear-catching and innovative years later. The synth and percussion are on point. It samples four songs: “Is That Your Chick (The Lost Verses)” by Memphis Bleek, “Larka 1.1” by Zero-G and Master Dilbahar, “Tomi Tablas 07” and “Classic Tumbi Loop 03” by Zero-G. Missy Elliott brings ample attitude, energy, and personality. Her rhymes are fun and incredibly sharp. “Missy be puttin’ it down, I’m the hottest ‘round,” she brags in the first verse, continuing, “I told y’all mother— (Skrrt), y’all can’t stop me now / Listen to me now, I’m lastin’ twenty rounds.” Confident! “Who’s that bitch? People you know,” she bites in the second verse, adding, “People, here I come, now sweat me when I’m done / We got the radio shook like we got a gun.” Damn! The chorus is simple but utterly infectious: “(Go) Get your freak on (go), get your freak on.” Hell yeah! The change of pace during the third verse is cool. “(Yes) I know you feel me now (Yes), I know you hear me loud / (Yes) I scream it loud and proud (Yes), Missy gon’ blow it down.” A new synth arrives that doesn’t change the minimalist vibe but provides a welcome contrast that keeps “Get Ur Freak On” fresh. The ending is marvelous. “Get Ur Freak On” is one of the best ‘rap’ songs ever. That “new shit” is timeless!

10. Joe Simon, “Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor)”
Get Down // Ace // 1975
“Everybody, won’t you get on the floor (Get on the floor and let the good time roll).” Late, great soul singer Joe Simon (1936 – 2021) brought the house down with “Get Down, Get Down” aka “Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor).” “Get Down, Get Down” is the super groovy opener from his 1975 album, Get Down. The song is the perfect catalyst to ‘get your groove on.’ Interestingly, “Get Down, Get Down” earned Simon the sole top 10 hit of his career
. “Get Down, Get Down” peaked at no. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Simon and Raeford Gerald wrote and produced it. Simon serves up incredible singing. His voice oozes with that hearty, southern soul! “Everybody, won’t you clap your hands and dance / (Get on the floor and let the good time roll) come on,” he sings, aided by backing vocals. They continue singing, “All you gotta do is move your body, and shake what you can / Oh, baby (Get on the floor and let the good time roll).” Beyond conveying the memorable melodies superbly, his ad-libs and riffs are top-notch, too. Beyond fun, dance-inciting lyrics, “Get on the Floor” features a marvelous musical accompaniment with a locked-in rhythm section and biting, articulated horns. The piano parts are particularly bluesy and funky to the nth degree. One of the most interesting sounds is synths, which only elevate the colorful sound palette. In the epic “Get Down, Get Down”, the influence of gospel music is clear, specifically during the extended vamp at the end. One of the greatest to do it, Joe Simon easily made us “get on the floor” with this certified bop!

11. James Brown, “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine”
The 50th Anniversary Collection // UMG Recordings, Inc. // 2003
“Fellas, I’m ready to get up and do my thing (Go ahead, do your thing, then, get on up and do it) / …I want to get into it, man, you know /… Like a, like a sex machine, man, (Yeah, yeah!).” There will only ever be one James Brown. Rightfully dubbed The Godfather of funk, he left an indelible mark on the soul sub-genre. One of his best songs is “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine”. Sex Machine” was written by Brown, Bobby Byrd, and Ronald Lenhoff. Despite featuring sex in its title, it was a highly successful pop hit. It peaked at no. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. More than five decades after its arrival, “Sex Machine” remains the sugar honey iced tea – a timeless gem from James.
What makes “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” so good? James Brown infuses ample personality into his performance, period. Electrifying, the electricity begins with the infectious intro. After establishing the tone, the rhythm section enters and is firmly ‘in the pocket. The groove is badass – funky as hell! The drums, rhythmic guitar, and bass ‘bring the heat.’ Notably, The Original J.B.s back Brown. This includes Bootsy Collins on bass and his brother, Catfish Collins on guitar. Also, Brown provides some bluesy work on the keys. Even with sex raising eyebrows, the lyrics are simple and generally, non-offensive.
“Get up (get on up) / Get up (Get on up)
Stay on the scene (Get on up)
Like a sex machine (Get on up).”
“Sex Machine” gives more of an attitude than bedroom talk. Notably, Brown quotes a past hit in the second verse: “You said the feeling you got to get / You give me the fever in a cold sweat.” Other notable moments include the unforgettable “Take ‘em to the bridge?” where Brown infectiously asserts, “Hit me now! / Come on! / Stay on the scene, like a sex machine.” “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” is a certified classic.
