Sometimes, 5ive Songs can be a springboard for expanded lists. That’s the case with 10 SONGS THAT EXPLORE ‘LOVE AGAIN’. Sugarcoating nothing, SONGS THAT EXPLORE ‘LOVE AGAIN’ arrives as a product of Love Again 5ive Songs No. 25. As I selected five songs to meet the requirement of that mini-playlist, I also compiled additional songs to later publish as a full-fledged playlist.
Keeping things relatively short and sweet, this playlist is limited to 10 songs, hence, adding five more compared to the aforementioned mini list. Brevity may be in play, but I can assure you there is no dip in quality. 10 SONGS THAT EXPLORE ‘LOVE AGAIN’ features music courtesy of Anthony Hamilton, Brandy, Céline Dion, Eminem, and Lyyke Li among others. Without further ado, be prepared to love again… or not…
1. Brandy & Daniel Caesar, “Love Again”
b7 • Entertainment One • 2020
“Love Again,” a collaboration by Brandy and Daniel Caesar, appeared on both Caesar’s 2019 album, CASE STUDY 01 and Brandy’s 2020 album, b7. It’s a terrific duet that just happened to be nominated for a Grammy.
In the context of the single, the relationship has ended, yet both parties seem to be willing to find reconciliation. Both offer their perspective on where things fell short, offering up a seemingly simple solution:
“If you can take my hand I promise we’ll find love again.”
2. Dua Lipa, “Love Again”
Future Nostalgia • Warner • 2020
Just when you think “Love Again” is going to be the first ballad on the superb Dua Lipa album Future Nostalgia, following a slower intro, both groove and tempo kick in. KOZ produces the longest record of the album, which clocks in at over four minutes in duration. Even so, “Love Again” continues a consistent, entertaining run by the Grammy winner, showcasing terrific vocals, catchy songwriting, and decadent ear candy – those disco strings are epic! A sample (“Your Woman” by White Town) goes quite a long way on this love-centric gem.
“I never knew I had it in me to dance anymore But goddamn, you got me in love again.”
3. Logan Prescott, “Love Again”
“Love Again” • Seafoam Edison • 2020
“Every time I’m touched by a lovely lady / I’m in love again / I try t give it up, but it’s running in my blood…” Yep, Logan Prescott, that’s a relatable feeling whether you’re a boy or girl. Who is Logan Prescott you ask? Well, Prescott is a Dallas-based indie-pop artist. The song that has garnered him some buzz is “Love Again.” Obviously, that’s good news for us considering this playlist is comprised of 10 SONGS THAT EXPLORE ‘LOVE AGAIN’, sigh.
On “Love Again,” Logan is totally in his feelings, as the excerpted lyrics from the chorus suggest. “It doesn’t matter what I think I know,” he sings on the second verse, continuing, “I can swear that I’m not better off on my own.” Basically, he’s lonely, every person seems like a potential GF for him, even if it’s mere fantasy. One of the key, recurring lines from Prescott is “Will we be just friends?” Clearly, he wants more – he wants a committed relationship. Vocally, he sounds amazing – his tone is clear and gorgeous. Furthermore, the production is well-rounded and perfectly suited for this love-centric joint.
4. Lady Gaga, “I’ll Never Love Again”
A Star is Born Soundtrack • Interscope • 2018
“I would’ve broke my heart in two / Tryin’ to save a part of you.” Prepare for a sad one folks, sigh. “I’ll Never Love Again” appears as the final song on the A Star is Born Soundtrack – it’s some kind of closer. Furthermore, in the film, it’s the final song performed by Lady Gaga (Allie). On this gorgeous ballad, Allie remembers Jack (Brandley Cooper), who committed suicide. Even though A Star is Born is film as opposed to real life, this is an unfortunate, tragic ending – get the tissues ready.
“I’ll Never Love Again” allows Lady Gaga to show her impressive vocal skills. At times she opts for more poise. At other times, she delivers more powered, robust vocals. Throughout, the memories and the extent of her love for late hubby are front and center. The chorus says it best:
“Don’t want to feel another touch Don’t wanna start another fire Don’t wanna know another kiss No other name falling off my lips Don’t wanna to give my heart away To another stranger Or let another day begin Won’t even let the sunlight in No, I’ll never love again I’ll never love again.”
5. Eminem, “Never Love Again”
Music to Be Murdered By • Shady/Aftermath/Interscope • 2020
Eminem rediscovered some of his mojo on his surprise 2020 studio album, Music to Be Murdered By. It wasn’t perfect mind you, but definitely an improvement. On “Never Love Again,” the listener is treated to some old-school production, produced by Eminem, Dr. Dre, Dem Jointz, Trevor Lawrence, Jr., and Dewaun Parker. In addition to its classic sound in the context of the album, the rapper serves up rhymes referencing drug use – charming!
“I can only take so much of you at one time Because too much of you’s just too much to swallow sometimes Gotta take you in doses, but when you’re not at my side I shake in convulsions, separation anxiety ‘cause we may be the closest.”
If it’s that sort of love that Eminem is referencing, then he certainly should NEVER LOVE AGAIN!
6. Lyyke Li, “Never Gonna Love Again”
I Never Learn • RCA • 2014
“Baby, can you hear the raian fall on me? Never gonna love again / Baby, can you hear my heart cry tonight?” On the beautiful, “Never Gonna Love Again”, Swedish alternative-pop singer Lyyke Li vows that she’s, well, “never gonna love again.” Why? Because she only wants him and nobody else. If she can’t have him, she’ll never love anybody else. It’s passion, hence that makes this gem from her 2014 album, I Never Learn, sound incredibly enthusiastic.
The major key and the gargantuan scope of the refrain also amplify her dedication and resolve to make things work. You can tell Lyyke Li ‘feels some type of way,’ willing to find a solution to what ailed her previous relationship.
“Every time the rain falls, think of me On a lonely highway How can we turn around the heartache? Oh, I, I’m alone tonight, babe And I’m never gonna love again.”
Lykke Li seems to accept her lot in love, but should she? Even as she’s experiencing some trying times, there’s nothing trying about this gem.
7. John Newman, “Love Me Again”
Tribute • Universal Island • 2013
“I need to know now, know now / Can you love me again?” Released in the UK in 2013, Tribute, the debut album by soulful British pop artist John Newman, arrived stateside in 2014. The enjoyable LP definitely had one record that shined above the rest: “Love Me Again.” A number one hit in Britain, it’s easy to see why this pop soul cut was incredibly popular.
In some ways, “Love Me Again” parallels the work of Bruno Mars, an artist straddling pop and soul, pleasing a wide fan base. “Love Me Again” represents both retro- and modern-soul at its best. Vocally, Newman sings like nothing short of a champ. The vintage horns and soaring strings certainly serve as inspiration for Newman’s gritty, emotional pipes.
8. Run The Jewels, “Love Again (Akinyele Back)”
Ft. Gangsta Boo
Run The Jewels 2 • Mass Appeal • 2014
“I put that dick in her mouth all day / …She play with that (dick in her mouth all day) … / I think I’m in love again.” With “Love Again (Akinyele Back),” Run the Jewels create a record that is for ADULTS ONLY. ‘Adult entertainment’ and ‘X-rated’ might as well be the middle names of this explicit joint from Run The Jewels 2! The hook leaves NOTHING to the imagination, much like anything considered erotic. Interestingly, Gangsta Boo plays a hyper-sexual, hella pornographic role on her guest verse.
“I had a young player from the hood Lick my pussy real good Kept me stuck with lots of wood Kept my bank account on swoll Sniffed my pussy like a rose, smokin’ on dro Made a porn tape, that n***a is a pro, you ain’t know? He had a lot of bad bitches in his past But I was the one who turned that boy into a motherfuckin’ man His tongue is bomb...”
9. Céline Dion, “Falling in Love Again”
Courage • Sony Music Entertainment • 2019
“When the sun went down on that day / I never thought that love would come back to me…” Phew – those lyrics just provide all of the feels, Céline Dion. Those moving words hail from “Falling in Love Again,” the third track from the Canadian Grammy winner’s 2019 album, Courage. As the lyrics suggest, “Falling in Love Again” is a very personal record for Dion.
The first verse from “Falling in Love Again” continues as follows:
“When I closed my eyes and tried to dream Darkness was the only thing I could see.”
Why so glum? Well, this is a ballad about falling in love again following loss – death specifically. In 2016, Dion lost her husband, René Angélil. Obviously, that was devastating, and the aforementioned lyrics reflect on the fact that she was preparing to be alone the rest of her life. But, that’s how things ultimately shake out on this piano ballad – with some strings providing additional color and punch. Ultimately, she’s found love again even when it didn’t seem possible. On the bridge, we can see the triumphant Dion, as she lets loose for the first time, showcasing the powerful nature of here pipes:
“Just when I thought I was destined to end up all alone You showed me there’s more to this life.”
This is an absolutely radiant record that feels incredibly authentic.
10. Anthony Hamilton, “Never Love Again”
Ain’t Nobody Worryin’ • Arista • 2005
We close out 10 SONGS THAT EXPLORE ‘LOVE AGAIN’ with an underappreciated gem from 2005. Anthony Hamilton is a R&B artist who has had to fight for every ounce of success he’s achieved. Finally, back in 2003, he ‘came up’ with a platinum-certified album, Comin’ From Where I’m From, propelled by soulful hit, “Charlene”. His follow-up album, Ain’t Nobody Worryin’, would give him a gold-certified album. It also provides us with another brilliant, ‘love again’ song, “Never Love Again.”
“Never Love Again” is something of an ‘uncharacteristic’ performance by Anthony Hamilton. How so? Well, it finds the gritty soul singer tapping into his falsetto for the majority of the song. Sure, we get that robust middle register on the chorus, but the verses are dominated the head – ‘head voice’ that is! When I first heard this song years back, I’ll never forget being so impressed hearing how potent he was going outside the box. As far as the theme, Hamilton questions if he can get back to point of loving again following a devastating break-up. On the centerpiece, the chorus, he sings:
“How could I ever love again How could I start to love again After you broke me down, it’s hard To trust that feeling, to fall in love again.”
