Death Metal PlaylistGetting specific and stepping out of the box, this playlist from The Musical Hype selects 10 randomly-titled, quirky, death metal songs to analyze.

Wow, this may be the first playlist I’ve compiled where I feel like I don’t understand what is going on.  Maybe it’s the brutal nature of the content assembled.  Cutting straight to the chase, this list features 10 randomly-titled, quirky death metal songs. For the avid death metal enthusiast, they might find this list to be amateurish, a tad bit judgmental, or fair at best.  For everyone else who finds themselves intrigued by the sub-genre but uneducated, maybe you’ll learn something.  Then again, maybe not.  This is definitely stepping out of the box – but then again, The Musical Hype also has playlists about murderers and paraphilias
Oh and by the way, it should go without saying that you won’t escape explicit language with this one – fair warning!

1. Guttural Secrete, “Coprophilic Asphyxia”

Album: Reek of Pubescent Despoilment, 2006 / Nourishing the Spoil, 2013

Brutal Bands

Gutteral Secrete, Nourishing the Spoil © Brutal BandsGuttural Secrete. What a name.  That said, seems like a fitting one for a death metal band.  Guttural Secrete cover some suspect stuff musically, evidenced by “Coprophilic Asphyxia,” a colorful song from an album entitled Reek of Pubescent Despoilment. (It also reappears on the 2013 album, Nourishing the Spoil).  That’s some twisted stuff.  It goes deeper, as Guttural Secrete cover two paraphilias in the process: coprophilia and asphyxiophilia.

Encyclopedia.com describes coprophilia as: “
The condition of desire for sexual gratification and sexual arousal derived from the smell, taste, or sight of feces or from the act of defecation.  It is commonly referred to by the slang term scat.” Guttural Secrete has the scat covered:

“Obsessing over piss and shit / Fecal orgy shit stained I sit / Gagging from the stench so vile / Suffocating with a smile / Puking on myself, regurgitating fecal matter / Feels like razor blades carving up my throat.”

The US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health describes asphyxiophilia as a sexual masochism disorder.  “Asphyxiophilia is one of the most dangerous conditions associated to SMD and is characterized by the use of various strategies to achieve the level of oxygen depletion need to enhance sexual arousal, such as self-strangulation, hanging, suffocations with an object like a plastic bag over the head, chest compression, use of gas or volatile solvents, or a combination of these, up to a point of loss of consciousness.”

In the case of “Coprophilic Asphyxia,” the feces are the cause of the asphyxiation.

“Blood clots begin to form in my veins from the blockage of brown / Losing oxygen to my brain as my body shuts itself down / Laid out my cadaver is lifeless / Covered in a pool of my own shit.”

2. Gortuary, “Disembowelment by Regurgitation”

Album: Awakening Pestilent Beings, 2010

Sevared

Gortuary, Awakening Pestilent Beings © Sevared“Disembowelment by Regurgitation.” Jesus! There’s nothing heavenly about this record from San Diego, California brutal death metal band Gortuary.  If we take the title literally, the person is losing their bowels by throwing up. That’s absolutely disgusting.  Without reading the lyrics, it’s nearly impossible to figure out what vocalist Nate Twyman is singing. Of course, we have the lyrics for this hellishness and frankly, they say it all:

“Regurgitating bloody bile soaked entrails / Back onto the half-eaten flesh / Mangled vomitous disgorgement / Tantalizing with the scent of its own digestion.”

Gross, gross, GROSS.  Of course, there’s more.

“Permeating rot stimulating lusting hunger / Piles of guts pouring out your gut / Slashing and hacking / To devour maggot covered putrid flesh / Ingurgitated the living / Expel decomposing dead.”

3. Human Mincer, “Scaphocephaly: Status: Error”

Album: Degradation Paradox, 2011

Rising Nemesis

Human Mincer, Degradation Paradox © Rising NemesisMoving on from “Disembowelment by Regurgitation,” we encounter “Scaphocephaly: Status: Error,” courtesy of Spanish band Human Mincer. Honestly, this sounds like hell, literally. Satan’s very presence is easily perceptible.  The music is wild: quick tempo, jagged, raw guitars, pummeling drums, and vocals performing indecipherable lyrics.  Luckily, there are lyrics to read.

“Scaphocephaly: Status: Error” isn’t about hell or the devil, but rather focuses on a deformed head.  Scaphocephaly (sagittal synostosis), according to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, “is the most common type of craniosynostosis, which occurs when bones in an infant’s head fuse together abnormally.” Hmm, interesting that Human Mincer would choose such subject matter as the basis of a song, but “to each his own.”

“Head deformer, / Brainpower of a sickened brain / Voices & internal vibrations.”

4. Insidious Decrepancy, “Contemptuous Inception”

Album: Extirpating Omniscient Certitude, 2011

Brutal Bands

Insidious Decrepancy, Extirpating Omniscient Certitude © Brutal BandsJust the band names of many of these metal bands are disturbing. Now defunct Houston, Texas metal collective Insidious Decrepancy definitely had a way with names.  They also enjoyed lyrical themes including “gore, anti-religion, and perversity,” according to The Metal Archives. “Contemptuous Inception” appears on a 2011 album entitled Extirpating Omniscient Certitude.

Given their anti-religious stance, it’s not surprising that science and a lack of spirituality plays a key role in “Contemptuous Inception.”

“In the beginning, there was nothingness / All was null and void / Entangled in abhorration-meaningless life / Burning contempt for the virus
”

“Contemptuous inception / Insignificant life-forms litter / The wastelands accross the barren earth / The spiritual fallacy, mass devastation / Burning contempt inseminated by the worm / Perpetual hatred, malevolent inception / Salvation’s laceration / Rapture’s abomination
”

5. Visceral Disgorge, “Skullfucking Neonatal Necrosis”

Album: Ingesting Putridity, 2013

Amputated Vein

Visceral Disgorge, Ingesting Putridity © Amputated VeinNames seem to be everything in metal music – can’t be overemphasized.  Visceral Disgorge definitely isn’t a name fit for a conversation while eating, since it involves puking.  To match their absolutely offensive name, the band has released such foul-titled songs like “Force Fed Shredded Genetalia,” “Ball-Gagged and Gutted,” “Necrocoprphagia,” and “Maggot Infest Fuck Hole.” To quote Amy Winehouse, “what kind of fuckery” is this? The featured song is just as bad or worse than those listed: “Skullfucking Neonatal Necrosis.”

Breaking the title down word by word, skull fucking refers to sex involving the head, purportedly. Interestingly, the slang varies. In this song, it references sex with the “ocular cavities.” Neonatal refers to a newborn baby, while necrosis is described as “localized death of living tissue.” So, put those words together, and you’ve got a really screwed up metal song. This is low.  The lyrics make it even worse.

“I creep to the crib, bound and bleeding as you beg / Single mothers are such easy prey / Shut the fuck up bitch / My cock gets hard hearing both of your cries / Fragile baby bones break as momy gets raped / Bitch slapped and face fucked / She gurgles helplessly impaled with cock / Then stuff her mouth with a dirty sock / Infanticidal urge surges through me / Time for the little one / I grab it by the throat and start to choke
”

There are really no words. None. What’s wrong with this band?

6. Cerebral Effusion, “Humiliation Through Methodical Submission”

Album: Impulsive Psychopathic Acts, 2010

Cerebral Effusion

Cerebral Effusion, Impulsive Psychopathic Acts © Cerebral EffusionIt’s obvious that a number of metal bands have an obsession with the head.  “Skullfucking Neonatal Necrosis” was certainly more than personally bargained for.  Spanish band Cerebral Effusion continue this heady obsession, with cerebral referencing the brain/intellect, while effusion can be either (1) “unrestrained expression of words or feelings” or (2) “fluid that escapes,” in its simplest of terms. The band describes itself as “the artistic expression of human depravation.” Alrighty then.

Like the majority of bands on this playlist, the vocals are indecipherable.  Furthermore, we have no lyrics to try to figure out what is going through the band’s twisted mind.  What we do know, however, is that this is another dark, hellish, and intense listening experience.  While the listener isn’t humiliated, they’re definitely psychologically affected.

7. Septycal Gorge, “Anabasis/Paralysis”

Album: Scourge of the Formless Breed, 2014

Comatose Music

Septycal Gorge, Scourge of the Formless Breed © Comatose Music“Dislocated to insanity / None can’t more recognize a pure feeling / Paranoid analysis to check the impossible mistake.” Septycal Gorge becomes the next band earning a spot on this quirky list.  Founded in 2004, this Italian, brutal death metal band is comprised of four members: Diego Riccobene (guitar), Mariano “Marius” Soma (vocals), Marco “Los” Losano (guitar), and Davide “BrutalDave” Billia (drums). According to The Metal Archives, Septycal Gorge encompass the following lyrical themes: madness, death, and gore.  We’d expect no less than madness on a song entitled “Anabasis/Paralysis.” “Anabasis / Paralysis” is based on Homer’s Odyssey, according to bandcamp. That would make sense, considering Anabasis is a book written by a Greek historian and philosopher, Xenophon.

While understanding the lyrics remains a uniting characteristic of all these bands, Septycal Gorge are easier to comprehend.  Still, the lyrics are, insane, and the music is wild.

“To Hell I descend / Keep stagnating into this sickness / Ad astra per aspra [Through hardships to the stars]/ Condemned to fight the odds / Doors of perception opened on different worlds / Suffocated – humbled – distorted / Breathing consumed corrupted oxygen in molecules / Paralyzed in an eternal meaningless fight / No way to escape / Sentenced to immobility.”

“Humbled in commiseration / Descending to the Throne of Death / Choose between rebellion or stagnation / Anabasis
 paralysis.”

8. Antropofagus, “Sadistic Illusive Puritanism”

Album: Architecture of Lust, 2012

Comatose Music

Antropofagus, Architecture of Lust © Comatose MusicHere comes more weirdness. Antropofagus is a death metal band hailing from Italy. The band is comprised of four members: Meatgrinder (guitars), Paolo Chiti (vocals), Jacopo Rossi (bass), and Davide “BrutalDave” Billia (drums).  Notably, “Brutal Dave” is also a member of Septycal Gorge. Our quirky selection at hand is “Sadistic Illusive Puritanism,” hailing from the band’s 2012 album, Architecture of Lust.

Breaking down the song title, sadistic is a form of the word sadism, which definitely has a negative connotation.  Sadism is either (1) “the derivation of sexual gratification from the infliction of physical pain or humiliation on another person” or (2) “delight in cruelty / excessive cruelty.” Illusive is a variant of illusion, meaning “deceptive.” Puritanism can be best described in this context as “strictness and austerity especially in matters of religion or conduct.” So, we end up with cruel sex, deceptive, religion
 or something like that.

“Behind this dimension / Disarming the crossroad between death and lies / Imparting an illusion of carnal desire / Your eyes filled with conscientious weakness / On the knees with agony / Waiting for the rebirth of puritan / I reflect the light in your eyes / Eyes that bleed helplessness in front of my word / Useless waste of blood / You crawl on the ground like worms / Offer your mind to my will…”

9. Pathology, “Incisions of Perverse Debauchery”

Album: Incisions of Perverse Debauchery, 2008

Comatose Music

Pathology, Incisions of Perverse Debauchery © Comatose MusicDutch death metal band Pathology have the most normal band name of this list.  However, when it comes to album and song title, they still know how to play up shock value.  “Incisions of Perverse Debauchery.” Wow. Lyrically, the song speaks for itself, filled with blasphemy, profanity, and of course, perverseness.

“Perverse Debauchery / Bodies lying frozen and stained in blood / Severed limbs rotten from the Innocent / I’ll fuck your corpse until it dies… / I’ll fuck your religion and your so-called God / Blood stains left from torture / Bathing in the Indecency / Loathing depravity paradox of perverse / Beyond the threshold of confinement / Beheading the sacraments.”

“Lust my spoiled semen ingesting it at will / Swallowing my sins, Captive in my Tomb… / Raping the headless, keeping the bodies preserved / Incisions of the vital organs.”

So, Pathology incorporate decapitation, necrophilia, blasphemy, torture, and rape
 charming.

10. Epicardiectomy, “Feculent Colostomy”

Album: Putreseminal Morphodysplastic Virulency, 2014

New Standard Elite

Epicardiectomy, Putreseminal Morphodysplastic Virulency © New Standard EliteAlas, we’ve come to the end of this infernal journey.  We conclude with Prague brutal death metal band Epicardiectomy. Epicardiectomy is comprised of four members: Andrew (“Gutturals”), Serge (guitar), Stan (bass), and Don Mosconni (drums). An epicardiectomy is “surgical removal of the epicardium, usually performed in constrictive pericarditis to permit greater diastolic filling of the heart.” In simplest terms, it’s a heart procedure.

Moving on to the title of the album that “Feculent Colostomy” hails from. Putreseminal Morphodysplastic Virulency. WTF! Breaking down the album title, putre-seminal, seems to be a combination of putrid and seminal (semen). The prefix morph- means shape, while dysplastic could be referencing a dysplastic nevus, or atypical skin mole that can be mistaken for melanoma apparently. Dysplasia, a related word, are “cells that look abnormal under a microscope but are not cancerous,” according to The National Cancer Institute (NCI). As for virulency, virulence is (a) “relative severity and malignancy” or (b) “The relative capacity of a pathogen to overcome body defenses.” That took entirely too long.

Moving on to “Feculent Colostomy,” something that’s feculent (fecal) is “foul with impurities.” As for a colostomy, it’s the “surgical formation of an artificial anus by connecting the colon to an opening in the abdominal wall.” So, in essence, “Feculent Colostomy” is a colostomy gone wrong.  The lyrics confirm this, and it’s definitely putrid to say the least!

“Horrible pus dripping prolapse, the scene of repugnance / Hundreds of needles are piercing the rectum area / Sharp tools are stuck in rancid prostate / Putrid crotch of slowly opening it’s abyss / Decomposing mass is bubbling within the insides / Sticking the rusted pipe to the victims belly / Ripping through the flesh / Stabbing again and again until the tube / Sticks the colon / Erupting with gore mixed with feces / I drop down to my knees before the fountaining hole / Sucking on the streaming feculent masses / Catching every splash with my mouth squeezing every drop / Filling my stomach with putrescent pure / I suck my victim all inside out.”
