Whitney Houston, Who Would Imagine a King | Music Lifts 🎶 🏋

In the 48^th edition of Music Lifts (2024), we’re uplifted by Whitney Houston performing, “Who Would Imagine a King.”

Welcome to Music Lifts 🎶 🏋, a column highlighting songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs exuding fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 48^th edition of Music Lifts 🎶 🏋 (2024), we highlight “Who Would Imagine a King” as performed by Whitney Houston.

“Mommies and daddies always believe / That their little angels are special indeed,” Whitney Houston sings in the first verse of the gorgeous, simplistic, R&B/gospel ballad, “Who Would Imagine a King”.  She continues on the 12^th track and highlight from The Preacher’s Wife Soundtrack, “And you could grow up to be anything / But who would imagine a king?” Hallerin Hilton Hill and Mervyn Warren composed “Who Would Imagine a King.” Houston and Warren produced it.

Like “The Birthday of a King”, the King on “Who Would Imagine a King” is ‘the reason for the season,’ J-E-S-U-S, Jesus! Part of The Preacher’s Wife takes place during Christmas. This is why “Who Would Imagine a King,” which references the well-known story of the baby born to the Virgin Mary becoming Jesus, appears in the film.  Jesus is the central figure in Christianity. Throughout, Houston sings about the possibilities of what Baby Jesus could be, all upstanding, but imagining him being ‘a king’ – King of Kings and Lord of Lords – requires ample faith.

“A shepherd or teacher is what you could be
Or maybe a fisherman out on the sea
Or maybe a carpenter building things
But who would imagine a king?”

Ultimately, “Who Would Imagine a King” is another fantastic gem in the Whitney Houston catalog.  Houston performs more cool, calm, and collected – more poise than overtness.  Regardless, Houston sounded amazing, showing her voice at its best.  As for the song, isn’t it awesome that a Savior was born, who ultimately died for our sins so that we may have everlasting life?  Food for thought.
