Weezer, Pacific Daydream © AtlanticWeezer returns with “Beach Boys,” the third teaser track from their album, Pacific Daydream (October 27).

Some bands seem to fade and lose interest in recording new music past their prime. Weezer isn’t one of those bands.  While their popularity and relevance have diminished over the years, the alt-rockers continue to be prolific. Once more, Weezer returns with a new album, Pacific Daydream, due October 27. “Beach Boys” marks the third single/teaser track issued from Pacific Daydream, following “Feels Like Summer” and “Mexican Fender.”

“Beach Boys” opens with a prominent bass line, paired with guitar chords.  On the first verse, a sick groove is gradually constructed. It reaches full fruition by the chorus. As always Rivers Cuomo has ample swagger. Lyrically, he’s ‘all-over-the-place.’

“Walking with the Mexicans / Should I call an ambulance?”

“We need a melody / A gorgeous four-part harmony…”

“Everyone wants to be cooler than everyone else / It’s a hip-hop world.”

Okay, what’s his point? Good question.  Nonetheless, the chorus is catchy, if as odd as everything else:

“Turn it up / It’s the Beach Boys / Singing out in a sweet voice / On a roll like a twist toy / Keep cranking them Beach Boys…”

One of the selling points of “Beach Boys” is the use of Beach Boys’ musical cues. This gives “Beach Boys” more personality, more character.  This occurs on the ‘hook,’ for lack of a better sectional characterization:

“They’ll be there when you wake up / You soothing midnight mantra.”

Final Thoughts

The big question is, what does one make of Weezer and “Beach Boys?” Good question, and the answer is ‘up in the air.’  This is a respectable song, but, WTF is Rivers Cuomo and company really doing? What exactly do they have planned for Pacific Daydream? Arguably, this teaser track delivers more questions than answers.  Thoroughly confusing. Still, it’s enjoyable enough.
