3.5 out of 5 stars

Breakout urban artist Ty Dolla $ign returns with the infectious “Zaddy,” a single from his forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Campaign.

Ty Dolla $ign was among breakout stars in late 2015 and throughout the course of 2016.  Somewhere between an R&B artist and rapper, Dolla Sign is one of many duel threats that characterize urban music as of late.  After releasing his debut in November 2016 (Free TC), Dolla $ign returns with his sophomore album, Campaign, less than a year later (due September 23). Single “Zaddy” serves a promo single for the project.

What exactly is a “Zaddy?” Judging by the lyrical content, a “sugar daddy.”  “Zaddy” opens with spoken word phone call from a girl.  On the call, she’s telling Ty what she wants materialistically.  Ty Dolla $ign, hence, sings (and raps) about what he receives in return.  For the most part, this is rap stylistically – pop-rap considering there’s definite pitch about the vocals.

The M.O. is sex, period.

“I eat it, I eat it, I beat it / I f*ck her, she ask me why Dolla so nasty.”

On the catchy hook, Dolla $ign infectiously and repetitively refers to himself as a “zaddy”:

“She keep callin’ me zaddy / she keep on callin’ me zaddy / she keep on callin me zaddy / that lil baby got a fatty…”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Zaddy” is catchy as albeit. The concept and messaging of the record is shallow but undoubtedly infectious. All in all, “Zaddy” is enjoyable through and through.
