Trey Songz, Tremaine the Album © AtlanticOn his second single from Tremaine, “Playboy,” R&B Casanova Trey Songz finds it difficult to ‘hang up his playa shoes.’

On “Nobody Else But You”, the promo single from Tremaine the Album, Trey Songz seemed to be turning a corner.  Yes, the R&B artist known for his love of singing about sex shifted the focus away from the physical to the emotional.  Somehow, didn’t we all know that wouldn’t stick? On his second single from Tremaine, “Playboy,” Songz can’t get past his playboy status.

From the jump, Trey shares his shortcomings with the world.

“Don’t know why I’m still
Still kissing girls that I don’t love
Still stumbling out of these clubs
Still, I’m just so hard to trust
Don’t know why I’m still a playboy
Still running ‘round tryin’ to lay up
Still fucking but I wanna make love, I really want to
Don’t know why I’m still a playboy.”

On the verses, he provides details for his playboy problem. On the first verse, Trey basically embraces his own words from song “Cake.”  He is quick to cite his conquests, is still guilty of such conquests, yet he genuinely wants to better himself… supposedly.

“Too many nights to remember
So many girls, I can’t county
Can’t keep track of these adventures
What has become of me now?
I though each one was special
Oh, who am I kidding?”

Notably, on both verses of this song, Trey embraces the spirit of “Nobody Else But You” when he sings, “I think it’s time to settle down.”  On the second verse, he still plays the victim card but does also offer some relatable substance.

“I’m feeling all kinds of pressure
My momma wants another grandchild
Can’t say I’m not making the effort…”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Trey Songz has another urban contemporary hit on his hands.  “Playboy” isn’t transcendent or the second coming, but it gives the R&B standout another respectable, sound performance.  Vocally, he’s on and lyrically, he’s in his wheelhouse.  Ultimately, “Playboy” exemplifies winning…in a most shallow way with good intentions.
