Trey Songz, Tremaine the Album © AtlanticTrey Songz hangs up his playa shoes on “Nobody Else But You,” a dearly devoted promo single from his seventh album, Tremaine the Album.

After nearly a three-year hiatus, R&B standout Trey Songz returns with his seventh studio album, Tremaine The Album (March 24).  Ahead of Tremaine, Songz drops a hot promo single, “Nobody Else But You.” The new single may not reinvent R&B, but Songz shows the utmost consistency without a doubt.

First of all, “Nobody Else But You” is well-produced. It features the expected palette of adult contemporary R&B / urban contemporary cues.  While the sound is indeed sound, “Nobody Else But You” isn’t particularly flashy.  It doesn’t need to be given the solidness of the performance. That said, it doesn’t necessarily distinguish itself from other, more cutting-edge urban records.  Regardless, that utmost consistency bodes well in Trey’s favor.

Something that this single does have that other Trey Songz songs eschew at times is class.  Sure, Tremaine as a whole boast the parental advisory label, but “Nobody Else But You” lacks it. That’s because Songz doesn’t focus on “the love below” but genuine love.  Yeah, he makes reference to his sexually-driven past, but arrives at the realization he’s truly in love.

“Even when I try and the hoes keep calling
Why we in the club, why I’m always ballin’
Tryna be in love, we don’t fall too often
It’s hard to, but still
I don’t want nobody else but you.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Trey Songz drops a winner with “Nobody Else But You.”  It’s not as cutting edge as his more sexually-driven numbers, but it’s definitely more mature.  By mature, it’s not a bore, even if it isn’t the year’s most distinctive tour de force.  Nonetheless, Songz is in excellent voice. His return adds some much-needed excitement in urban contemporary music in 2017.
