4 out of 5 stars

Trey Songz ushers in the Christmas spirit (and love) on his superb new single, “Comin Home.”

Lush sounds initiate “Comin Home.” It embraces the urban contemporary sound – no pop sellout here. A sound urban-contemporary groove anchors. A holiday single, “Comin Home”embraces the idea of love at Christmas:

“It’s so unfair that Christmas is all throughout the air / and I hate that we’re both alone / I’d rather be with you by the mistletoe.”

As always, Trey Songz delivers a solid vocal performance. Those silky, smooth pipes remain intact.  The overall form of “Comin Home” is a selling-point; the record is well organized. A solid pre-chorus sets up a catchy, memorable chorus:

“It hurts me more than what you think it does / when nights get cold, that’s when I miss your touch / the snow is falling and it won’t let up / okay, I’m on my way, hey.”

Naturally, that catchy, memorable chorus follows:

“Cause it’ll be nothing without you / Christmas will be nothing without you, girl / so I’m coming home, yeah, I’m coming home / yeah I’m coming home to the one that I love / It’ll be nothing without you.”

The bridge drives the song into a more hip-hop oriented sound, using pitch-shifted vocals mixed with Trey’s commanding tenor. Although gimmicky, this keeps this song from being predictable.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Comin Home” is a well-written, pleasant urban-holiday single from Trey Songz.  He sounds sensational and the songwriting and overall concept are pitch-perfect for the season.  Hopefully, the next Trey Songz album isn’t too far away.
