The Skins, Bury Me ยฉ American, Republic

4 out of 5 stars

Up-and-coming pop collective The Skins show immense potential on their debut single โ€œBury Me,โ€ enlisting the services of fellow up-and-comer, D.R.A.M.

Who are The Skins? The Skins are an up-and-coming pop, rock, hip-hop band signed to American (Republic). According to their Facebook page, the band formed in 2011.ย  Even so, they are just beginning their lucrative journey.ย  โ€œBury Meโ€ gives the band its first major label single, featuring another up-and-comer, rapper/singer D.R.A.M.ย  The results of the union end up being spectacular.

โ€œBury Meโ€ begins with excellent use of piano as the main chordal accompaniment. The vocal synth in the background is a nice touch. All in all, the record is slickly produced to the nth degree. The drum programming on the hook is absolutely sick. Interestingly, it has a detuned quality.ย  This sound, coupled with the detuned synths, makes for a brilliant union.

The vocals are solid throughout the course of the record, based in the urban-pop vein. D.R.A.M. collaborates on the second verse singing (as opposed to rapping). He ends up being welcome complement to The Skins vocally in regards to timbre. A catchy, if gimmicky chorus seals the deal:

โ€œBury me (in yo yo yo, yo yo yo love).โ€

Final Thoughtsย

Ultimately, โ€œBury Meโ€ is well-produced, well-conceived, and features an incredibly catchy chorus.ย  Itโ€™s not the yearโ€™s most profound record, but enjoyable through and through.
