4 out of 5 stars

Nicki Minaj & Mike WiLL rework Rae Sremmurd no. 1 hit “Black Beatles” as “Black Barbies.” The results remain impressive.

“Black Barbies” arrives as a remix of Rae Sremmurd no. 1 hit, “Black Beatles.” Nicki Minaj shifts “Black” from a guy perspective to a girl perspective.  Naturally, she uses the same production by Mike WiLL. The results are pitch-perfect… and raunchy AF.

Listening to the remix, it is now understandable why the original song exploded.  It features unique production work that is different from everything else on radio. Expectedly, Minaj delivers a raunchy, audacious hook: “That boy is a real p*ssy pleaser…”

Throughout its course, Minaj delivers various memorable lyrics.  During the first verse, she spits:

“I’m a f*ckin’ black Barbie / pretty face, perfect body / pink seats in the ‘Rari / always fuck him like I’m sorry.”

On the second verse, she cries foul about others in the rap game.  Ultimately, she elevates herself on a pedestal:

“B*tches can’t rap for shit, I’mma send ‘em some tips / all these b*tches is my sons, should be suckin’ my tits.”

One final gem comes in verse three, where she manages to reference Popeye, Brutus, Christianity, and Buddhism over the course of two lines:

“Now usually I don’t do this, I’m Popeye, she’s Brutus / Usually I’m a Christian but this peace is Buddhist.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Black Barbies” is a welcome variation on “Black Beatles.” Nicki Minaj is perfect for delivering an aggressive, feminine take. It doesn’t supplant the original, nor does Minaj go as H.A.M. as she did on her “Monster” verse, but she’s still on.
