Michael Bublé, Nobody But Me © Reprise

3 out of 5 stars

On the final pre-release single from his new album ‘Nobody but Me’, “The Very Thought of You,” Michael Bublé sounds respectable if unexceptional.

Ahead of his forthcoming album Nobody but Me, jazz/pop singer Michael Bublé releases one final single, “The Very Thought of You.”  “The Very Thought of You” is a popular vocal standard, right in his vocal lane.  Given its classicism, the single doesn’t provide a notable argument for (or against) the Canadian musician like some of his other singles.  In other words, it doesn’t do much sway someone on the fence about the forthcoming project…no shade.

First and foremost, Bublé sings “The Very Thought of You” soundly.  He has a beautiful vocal tone, as he’s exhibited throughout his career.  The production work is lovely, particularly the strings which amplify the emotion of the gem.  A ballad, hence, typically slow, this edition of the standard is a tad too slow. There’s a question of excitability and energy.  Had there been more BPM, it would’ve given him more momentum.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “The Very Thought of You” is sound, but not exceptional. Bublé sings it well, but it isn’t the valedictory performance of his career.  If this were the first impression, it probably wouldn’t tip the scales in his favor like singles with more distinction and personality.
