Mac Miller, We | Track Review 🎵

Mac Miller follows up The Divine Feminine‘ promo single, “Dang!” with a lush, thought-provoking second single “We,” featuring CeeLo Green.

After blessing his fans with single “Dang”, Mac Miller returns with a second single, “We,” featuring CeeLo Green.  Based upon the two offering from Miller, his fourth studio album, The Divine Feminine, should be interesting.  The Divine Feminine arrives mid-September.  

“We” features dusty, soulful production work – a predominately old-school sound.  At times, “We” drifts into the background, given its lush, laid-back sound. Hence, it requires more than one listen to truly unveil its magic. Interestingly, guest vocalist CeeLo is incredibly subtle.  This is a change of pace considering his usual gritty, soulful approach.

“Well okay, it’s alright, it’s okay
Okay, well you can be my…
Well okay, it’s alright, it’s okay
You can be my…”

At 5:19, “We” is lengthy. Even so, lyrically, there are plenty of worthwhile moments. The message centers around a true, healthy relationship.  There is a shift from “me” (emotionless sex) to “we” (a dedicated, selfless relationship). Miller spits,

“Well, I’ve tried to call you, have us a discussion 
We never talk, we always way too busy fuckin’.”

Later, he shines, rapping,

“I find that I keep flying high, sometimes I must remind myself
That change is more than pennies laying on the floor inside the well
You cross my mind, do not apologize for being fine as hell…”

Final Thoughts 

“We” is beautifully produced. Miller delivers thoughtful rhymes about trying to be emotionally sound as a couple as opposed to physically without emotions. To reiterate, while subtle, Green’s contributions are beautiful.
