Up-and-coming R&B artist Kehlani is set to drop her official debut album, SweetSexySavageSweetSexySavage is due January 27, 2017.  Ahead of Savage, Kehlani dropped two singles: “Distraction” and “CRZY”. She returns with captivating third single, “Advice.”

“Advice” is mid-tempo, featuring lush production cues.  These cues include a driving synth, piano, and rhythmic drum programming. The record features smooth vocals by Kehlani as soon as she enters. She shines on the first verse, singing: “You have a way with words / your silence is a curse / you always seem to break me down, down, down.”  Here, she plays the victim card. Overall, through the course of the song, she delivers a well-rounded performance. Kehlani asks questions on the pre-chorus: “Cause how is the man of my dreams not a man of his words? / And how is the man for me just a man that makes me hurt?” The smoothness carries over to the chorus.  The chorus is handled by backing vocals, while Kehlani riffs, ad libs. Her falsetto during the second iteration is stunning to say the least.

“It’s time to take my own
Take my own advice, take my own advice
Need me to take my own advice
Take my own advice, take my own advice.”

Kehlani grows more assertive on the second verse, ascending higher and packing a mightier punch: “I took a chance on this / I took too big a risk / And now I’m left with the pain to get me high.” The bridge is sound, providing excellent separation between verse and chorus: “You had to break me, take me / To make me better / But I had to save me, baby / Now or never.”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Advice” gives Kehlani another exceptional single ahead of her proper debut.  She is an extremely gifted vocalist, a trend that continues here without a hitch.  Early indications suggest SweetSavageSexy will be a fantastic album.
