3 out of 5 stars

Up-and-coming country musician Kane Brown drops a new single “Thunder in the Rain.” It’s pleasant, but not great or transcendent.

Kane Brown is among country music’s rising newcomers.  After releasing an EP in 2016 (Chapter 1), Brown drops new single, “Thunder in the Rain.” “Thunder in the Rain” is enjoyable, but by no means the savior of country music.

Much of the flaws with “Thunder in the Rain” is its predictable script. Nonetheless, there are plenty of attributes.  The rhythm carried by the banjo is one of those attributes. Another is the big chorus, which is catchy despite the predictability.

Brown has a nice set of pipes. It would be nice, however, to hear him expand his scope. Taking his performance “to the next level” would make him more electrifying.  Additionally, nitpicking, on the repeated portion of the chorus, Brown could stand to infuse more oomph and emotion.  “Thunder in the Rain” as a whole would benefit from more distinction.

Final Thoughts

Predictable, “Thunder in the Rain” is pleasant regardless. It benefits from a catchy chorus, clearly the selling point. Arguably, Kane Brown needs more to build up his base.
