John Mayer, "Love on the Weekend" [Photo Credit: Columbia]Pop-rock singer-songwriter and beastly guitarist John Mayer returns with โ€œLove on the Weekend,โ€ a lovely single but no means the second coming.

After taking some time off, John Mayer returns. To say that he returns in a big way would be a gargantuan understatement.ย  New single โ€œLove on the Weekendโ€ is indeed lovely, but by no means the second coming.

โ€œLove on the Weekendโ€ sports a soft-rock sound, led by guitar.ย  John Mayer delivers clear, calm, and collected vocals. Ultimately, โ€œLove on the Weekendโ€ finds Mayer flexing his signature sound. The production doesnโ€™t swallow up Mayer in the least โ€“ he is always at the forefront.

Subtlety pays off here. He does nothing that particularly excites, but as a comeback song, thereโ€™s enough that the listener feels refreshed to hear him again. ย Production gradually adds a bit moreโ€ฆ Ultimately, the approach is better than showing the whole deck of cards from the jump

Final Thoughtsย

All in all, it is great to hear Mayer returning to music.ย  โ€œLove on the Weekendโ€ isnโ€™t a classic, but itโ€™s a respectable, pleasant comeback if nothing else.ย  This wonโ€™t go down as an all-time great John Mayer song, but it is sufficient โ€“ it whets the palate minimally.
