John Mayer, "Love on the Weekend" [Photo Credit: Columbia]Pop-rock singer-songwriter and beastly guitarist John Mayer returns with “Love on the Weekend,” a lovely single but no means the second coming.

After taking some time off, John Mayer returns. To say that he returns in a big way would be a gargantuan understatement.  New single “Love on the Weekend” is indeed lovely, but by no means the second coming.

“Love on the Weekend” sports a soft-rock sound, led by guitar.  John Mayer delivers clear, calm, and collected vocals. Ultimately, “Love on the Weekend” finds Mayer flexing his signature sound. The production doesn’t swallow up Mayer in the least – he is always at the forefront.

Subtlety pays off here. He does nothing that particularly excites, but as a comeback song, there’s enough that the listener feels refreshed to hear him again.  Production gradually adds a bit more… Ultimately, the approach is better than showing the whole deck of cards from the jump

Final Thoughts

All in all, it is great to hear Mayer returning to music.  “Love on the Weekend” isn’t a classic, but it’s a respectable, pleasant comeback if nothing else.  This won’t go down as an all-time great John Mayer song, but it is sufficient – it whets the palate minimally.
