3.5 out of 5 stars

Jake Miller, Overnight (EP) © Warner Bros.Jake Miller aims to “fix it overnight” on slick, catchy urban-pop single, “Overnight.”  “Overnight” could be the catalyst for greater success.

Success hasn’t been overnight for singer/pop-rapper Jake Miller. Miller is firmly planted in up-and-coming status, looking to make forthcoming EP Overnight a success.  The totally ripped pop star (just an observation) seems to have the total package. Simply, he needs a breakthrough.  Could the title track, single “Overnight” be the breakthrough Miller needs? Perhaps.

First, it should be noted that Miller sings.  There is no rapping, not even pop-rap. Miller has previously showcased his vocal talent, but “Overnight” takes it “to the next level.” He has an awesome canvas to paint on, considering the urban-pop production is slick AF.

The song itself is predictable thematically. The relationship is fading, but Miller argues it can be fixed “overnight.”

“I know sometimes you wanna go and give up / you know we only argue when I’m fucked up / so maybe we should try to kiss and make up”

It’s predictable – the “same old song” type deal – but effective.  The chorus sums up the sentiment, specifically the optimism to repair.

“They say change takes time / but baby, we can fix it overnight / if you let me try / then maybe we can fix it overnight, overnight / oh, overnight”

Final Thoughts

Clearly aimed at crossover/pop success, “Overnight” succeeds.  Reiterating, the slick urban-pop production is a selling point. Furthermore, the catchy chorus is respectable.  Ultimately, the record is nicely sung. Miller has a stronger singing voice than he’s shown as of yet.
