4 out of 5 stars

Idina Menzel saves her best, most personal single, “Perfect Story,” right before the release of the album, Idina. There is more oomph compared to some of the other singles. “Perfect Story” feels more personal and more authentic.

The opening line could’ve derailed “Perfect Story” due to its schmaltziness:

Jack and Jill went up the hill, a bucket full of dreams.”

While initially, it is ‘eye-roll worthy’, it becomes more alluring as the modus operandi of the record reveals itself.  Menzel wishes she could give her son a perfect story, much like fairy tales or nursery rhymes.  The imperfection isn’t a lack of money, but likely her divorce.   This is revealed clearly on the chorus:

“I’m so sorry / I couldn’t give you the perfect story / a textbook happy ending / where nobody here gets hurt / but don’t you worry / your daddy and your mommy / may be a little broken / but not our love for you / oh our love for you / can move the earth / ooh ooh ooh”

The chorus is exceptionally executed.  The “oohs” at the end proves to be a magnificent touch.

Unsurprisingly, Menzel delivers stunning vocals. She sounds polished here, showcasing her superb tone.  The simple production work is perfectly suited for this number.  The focus is the lyrics and vocals.

 Final Thoughts

“Perfect Story” may be the best single issued from Idina.  To reiterate, it has more oomph – it’s more powerful.  While it’s not new subject matter, Menzel executes it respectably.  “Perfect Story” ups the ante on Idina.
