Gorillaz, Humanz © ParlophoneGorillaz (Damon Albarn) returns with “Andromeda,” one of 4 promo singles from the upcoming album, Humanz. D.R.A.M. guests on the enjoyable track.

Gorillaz are back! Following a six-year hiatus, the eclectic, virtual hip-hop collective returns with its fifth studio album, Humanz. Upon the announcement of Humanz, Gorillaz brainchild Damon Albarn issued four singles: “Saturnz Barz,” “Andromeda,” “Ascension,” and “We Got the Power.” “Andromeda” features the talents of infectious, up-and-coming rapper/singer, DRAM.

First things first – production! “Andromeda” floats more than packing a mean punch. There’s nothing wrong with this ultimately, but arguably, the record doesn’t distinguish itself as being truly memorable. It features a standard, danceable beat, giving it some groove, but still, somehow, lacks oomph. It’s well produced by all means, but not in thrilling, truly dynamic fashion.

As for the performance and song itself, it is sound, not necessarily cutting edge.  DRAM, an artist with a boatload of personality, comes off as underwhelming.  Even if he isn’t necessarily the centerpiece of “Andromeda,” it seems a missed opportunity not to give him a bigger feature. Of course, this record isn’t about the “Broccoli” singer. It’s about 2-D (Damon Albarn of course).

2-D delivers a pleasant if low-key vocal.  While there is nothing explosive about the singing, this is Gorillaz true to form.  It works through and through.  So, what’s the song actually about? “Andromeda” doesn’t reference the Greek Mythological character, but rather, a soul club named Andromeda, apparently.  Reading and listening to the lyrics, love is central.  In a club, like Usher? Yes…maybe…not quite?

“Take it in your heart now, lover
Take it in your heart, heart, heart, heart
Take it in your heart
Take it in your heart
Where it all goes down.”

Final Thoughts

If “Andromeda” does nothing more, it gives off good vibes.  Vibe seems to be everything these days.  “Andromeda” has them.  All in all, it’s a respectable return for Albarn and Gorillaz.  Still, more DRAM please!!!
