Die Antwoord returns with eccentric single, “Banana Brain.”

South African collective, Die Antwoord can best be described as “one of a kind.”  What better word characterizes them than unique? Always compelling, Die Antwoord return mid-September with latest album, Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid. Promo single “Banana Brain” arrives ahead of the album. Expectedly, it’s odd, yet alluring.

A repetitive synth is the most important rhythmic component initially.  The synth is complemented by thudding kick drum.  A more definite groove (via the drums) enters, following Yolandi’s high-pitched, melodic vocals. Yolandi, expectedly, delivers a compelling, catchy hook.

“Banana brains, you’re the apple of my eye / stay with me tonight / cause I’m having the best time of my life”

Ninja offers a contrast to Yolandi’s pitched vocals, with his ever engaging rhymes.  On the first verse, Ninja embraces sex – shocker!

“Boobie one, boobie two / bouncing like a Looney Tune / booty boomin’, cookie juice / you’re so cute, like Pikachu”

Ninja’s second verse is more thoughtful; he’s thankful for his girl.  As for the rest of “Banana Brain,” the outro stands out in particular. The outro is loud, exciting, and intriguing.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Banana Brain” proves to be eccentric, but enjoyable.  Like past Die Antwoord songs/albums, it is exceptionally produced.  Most importantly, “Banana Brain” distinguishes itself from everything else.  This is a key characteristic of the collective’s music. Verdict: The Musical Hype approved.
