4 out of 5 stars

Pop stars are no longer innocent.  Were they ever? It’s difficult to find a pop song that eschews suggestiveness – innuendo is everywhere. Not just innuendo, but sex itself is everywhere.  On Demi Lovato’s latest single “Body Say,” it’s clear that sex is the M.O.  It’s not merely innuendo, but brutal honesty from the gifted pop singer.

Lovato, like many pop stars, embraces the urban-pop sound. Given the sensual nature of “Body Say,” the sound is perfectly suited.  Beyond the instrumental production, the vocal production is exceptional.  Lovato has a lovely set of pipes – the timbre is highly desirable.  On “Body Say,” Lovato shifts between the lower and upper register.  By the time the chorus hits (upper register), Lovato clearly contrasts the verse.

Speaking of the chorus, it’s catchy as albeit. Lovato doesn’t go into explicit detail about the body (her body), but she provides the premise.

“You can touch me with slow hands / speed it up, baby, make me sweat / dreamland, take me there, cause, I want your sex / if my body had a say, I wouldn’t turn away / touch, make love, taste you / if my body told the truth, baby I would do / just what I want to”

Much like Zayn (“Pillowtalk”), the references to tempo all but confirm sex.  As referenced earlier, Lovato confirms sex herself (“Dreamland, take me there, cause, I want your sex”).  Sigh, kids these days!

Final Thoughts:

All-in-all, “Body Say” is suggestive, fun, and well-produced.
