4 out of 5 stars

Charli XCX continues to build a compelling résumé with her newest single, “After the Afterparty.” She is assisted by up-and-coming rapper, Lil Yachty.

Charli XCX hasn’t quite established herself as a force in the United States.  That’s a shame considering the British alt-pop star has a lot to offer.  Her biggest claim to fame comes by way of Iggy Azalea on no. 1 hit, “Fancy.” She did dent the charts herself with “Boom Clap.”  Her sophomore album, SUCKER, was superb.  Perhaps her newest single “After the Afterparty” will build newfound momentum.  She is assisted by teen rapper, Lil Yachty.

“After the Afterparty” is well-produced.  The piano sounds particularly warm and bright, giving off an inviting quality. The synths coupled with the piano make an exceptionally lovely combination. Expectedly, the drum programming bangs hard.

Charli XCX’s vocals are exuberant as always, though to her credit, she shows more control on the verses. The chorus is catchy as albeit:

“Cause after the after party…”

Lil Yachty ends up being a great choice for a collaborator on this track. He’s young (19) and an up-and comer, much like XCX is stateside. On the bridge, the fact that XCX goes for a rhythmic, pop-rap style shows her versatility. This isn’t far-fetched from Lil Yachty’s turn, which makes the slight stylistic shift a sound complement to Yachty.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “After the Afterparty” is fun, youthful, well-produced, and well-performed.  This joint clearly has hit written all over it.  Charli XCX continues to be the gift that keeps giving.  Hopefully, it’s her time to receive the gift of commercial success and greater relevancy stateside.
