Track Review: Calvin Harris, ‘My Way’
Calvin Harris concocts another potential hit with “My Way,” a tropically-infused, infectious break-up anthem. No, Taylor Swift isn’t mentioned…directly
DJ, electronic musician, and producer Calvin Harris concocts another potential hit with “My Way.” The tropically-infused number is infectious, despite its status as a break-up anthem. Ex Taylor Swift isn’t mentioned, but one wonders the extent of her influence on the finished product.
The track opens abruptly – it might’ve been nice to have had an intro to set the tone. Cleverly, Harris makes an reference to the Frank Sinatra classic of the same title:
“Why wait to say, at least I did it my way?”
Harris delivers a raspy vocal performance. His vocals “grow on you” as the song progresses, particularly the second verse.
The tropical influence within this record is a nice touch. Overall, “My Way” is a well-produced, catchy record. It features a sound harmonic progression (music theory nerds), but nothing too crazy. Hook-line “You were the one thing in my way…” gets special treatment, of course, repeated over and over. This particular line seems to have Taylor Swift written all over it. According to Genius annotations, though, it’s only potentially about her.
Another clever lyric comes by way of:
“I made my move and it was all about you / now I feel so far removed”
Electronic artists and DJs aren’t experts when it comes to lyrics. Overall, “My Way” is successful and conveys its point without being a lyrical masterpiece.
Ultimately, to reiterate, Harris has another hit on his hands “My Way.” No, Taylor Swift isn’t mentioned, but the lyrics suggest that Harris’ breakup with her was influential to some extent. “My Way” isn’t the second coming, but definitely enjoyable by all means.
