3.5 out of 5 stars

Ariana Grande releases previously unreleased “Jason’s Song (Gave It Away),” an empowering track that didn’t appear on the  U.S. version of ‘Dangerous Woman.’

Ariana Grande isn’t in the process of releasing her fourth studio album just yet…as far as we know.  Dangerous Woman continues to impact the Billboard 200, sitting at no. 9 on the chart dated October 1, 2016.  Regardless, Grande released a new single, “Jason’s Song (Gave It Away).” Apparently, “Jason’s Song” was a bonus track from Dangerous Woman that wasn’t originally released in the U.S.

“Jason’s Song (Gave It Away)” opens with jazzy, show tune-style piano. Overall, the record features nice production touches in addition to the piano – guitar, strings, and a soulful bass line.

The groove is sick, while the harmonic progression is jazzy, much like the song itself.  Grande delivers compelling vocals, to no one’s surprise. Backing vocals during the chorus provides a lift.

One of the best moments isn’t even vocal – it’s a solo piano section.  The section is incredibly musical, with the pianist showing off. Much like any other Ari song, the chorus is a selling point:

“Well if you don’t want to see the girl I want to be / then why, then why should I listen? / if you don’t want to do the things I need from you / goodbye, goodbye / cause I gave it away, I gave it away, I gave it away / and I’m taking it right back”

Final Thoughts

The gist of “Jason’s Song (Gave It Away)” is empowerment. Grande isn’t going to let any man tell her what to do.  Even if it’s a bit clunky – being nitpicky – overall, “Jason’s Song” is another well-rounded, enjoyable record from Grande.
