Track Review: AFI, ‘White Offerings’
Goth-rock vets AFI return with The Blood Album, their first album since 2013. “White Offerings” serves as one of four pre-release singles.
It’s hard to believe that AFI has been around since the 1990s. Alas, it’s true. The Cali band returns after a four-year hiatus with AFI (The Blood Album). AFI have experienced minor success over the years, earning two platinum-certified albums. Four singles were released ahead of The Blood Album. “White Offerings” served as the promo of promos for The Blood Album.
“White Offerings” opens nebulously, with a wall of guitar sound. Quickly, stability – specifically groove – settles in. Frontman Davey Havok delivers incredibly Assertive vocals. He shouts, showcasing extreme passion. The chorus, in particular, is fiery:
“White offerings are all I bring / Welcome to white room, white room / White offerings are all I bring / I welcome you, I offer you this white room.”
The bridge is characterized by its repetition:
“I can feel your color changing” (3x) “I can feel it change, ah!”
If repetition itself doesn’t promote awesomeness or grandeur, a change of feel bodes in its favor. Contrast often benefits a song, particularly when the script is somewhat predictable.
Lyrically, “White Offerings” is no masterwork, but it definitely rocks hard. Give Havok and company credit for “White Offerings.” The Blood Album should be compelling, to say the least.
