Taylor Swift, Reputation © Big MachineTaylor Swift drops one final single, “Call It What You Want,” ahead of her high-anticipated sixth album, ‘Reputation.’

Nice introduction to set the tone of the record, which is cool, calm, and collected.  Taylor Swift delivers sexy vocals. She doesn’t go ‘above and beyond’ or do anything special vocally, but she meets expectations to deliver this pleasant, enjoyable single.  It sounds as if she never has to break a sweat, but still nails that romantic, intimate sound.  In addition to the vibe and pleasant vocals, the production work is excellent. It’s sleek, modern and, balanced.  Highlights include the drum programming and the synths.

Lyrically, Swift seems to be discussing her various issues with others.  From the start, she plays the victim, informing the listener of the ‘healing process.’

“My castle crumbled overnight
I brought a knife to a gunfight
They took the crown, but it’s alright
All the liars are calling me one
Nobody’s heard from me for months
I’m doin’ better than I ever was…”

The catchy chorus is one of the best features of “Call It What You Want.”  Here, it seems Swift is referring to her current boyfriend, and being in a happy place following various adversity.

“My baby’s fit like a daydream
Walking with his head down
I’m the one he's walking to
So, call it what you want, yeah
Call it what you want to
My baby’s fly like a jet stream
High above the whole scene
Loves me like I’m brand new…”

Final Thoughts

“Call It What You Want” seems to be a ‘step in the right direction’ for Taylor Swift.  Her promo campaign for reputation in regards to quality has been so-so.  “Call It What You Want” isn’t vintage Taylor Swift, but feels like a better fit for the ‘new’ Taylor compared to the singles preceding it.
