Hallelujah! Amen! That’s the reaction upon hearing “Rejoice,” the inspirational new dance single from Greek-Swedish DJ, Steve Angello.  “Rejoice” is one of the pleasant surprises of 2017.  Gospel and dance can coexist on the same song? Yes, thanks to an uplifting assist courtesy of Bishop T.D. Jakes.

How does “Rejoice” work? On Angello’s end, he creates a backdrop that has a spiritual sound.  No, this doesn’t sound like black gospel music, but it has religious sensibilities.  His choice of synths and pad – choral and organ namely – construct a pseudo-/ nu-gospel vibe.  Clocking in at more than seven-and-a-half minutes, Angello is in no rush.  Normally, such a lengthy joint would be too much, but given the epic, omniscient nature of “Rejoice,” it’s worth every minute and every second.

“Rejoice” is by no means static either.  There’s a progression – levels to the intensity.  It begins subtler, gains intensity with the addition of drums (half-time), and then goes full-force with a driving groove and synths.  As important as Steve Angello is, he couldn’t have pulled this off with T.D. Jakes, who truly propels “Rejoice” into the gem that it is.  It’s all good vibes from the Bishop, who inspires people of all different walks with his passion and prudence. His best line?

“Whoa, Dorothy, I wanna tell you.  You could’ve been home a long time ago. As soon as you decide to stop looking for answers in other People, and miracles somewhere down the yellow brick road, and click the heels of your mind and set your affections, on things that are more.  You could have been free years ago.”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Rejoice” is a grand piece of art from Steve Angello and T.D. Jakes.  In a market where so much music sounds the same, Angello takes a leap of faith and tries something different, more experimental.  The result is one of the best songs of the year.  Let the church say yes!
