St. Vincent, Masseduction © Loma VistaAnnie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, returns ‘short but sweet’ on “New York,” a promo single from her forthcoming album, MASSEDUCTION.

Grammy-winning alternative musician St. Vincent is back! After captivating the world with “Digital Witness” and her self-titled album collectively in 2014, she’s dropping MASSEDUCTION (October 13).  In advance of MASSEDUCTION, St. Vincent dropped singles “Los Ageless” and “New York.”

Even though it shouldn’t be a defining feature, one can’t help but pinpoint the profanity used in “New York.” Motherfucker St. Vincent? Geez! One reason is because it’s so unexpected.  Another is, it’s part of the unofficial pre-chorus, hence recurring.  St. Vincent has never had any trouble with showcasing her personality, but the mf-bomb just adds more.

“And if I call you from First Avenue
Where you’re the only motherfucker in the city
Who can handle me.”

Beyond her potty mouth, the song itself is enjoyable and well-written.  St. Vincent keeps things simple – it’s easy to follow.  Besides the varying pre-chorus, the chorus is appealing as well.   The chorus doesn’t appear until after the second verse, then twice after the third.

“I have lost a hero
I have lost a friend
But for you, darling
I’d do it all again.”

Vocally, Annie Clark sounds cool, calm, and collected – even when she swears.

Final Thoughts

Verdict? “New York” gives St. Vincent another well-rounded, enjoyable song.  Sure, it’s not quite as exciting as “Digital Witness,” but the sound and vibes are on-point.  The biggest con is length – it just crosses the two-and-a-half-minute mark!
