Sammie, Coming of Age © EmpireSammie continues his ‘coming of age’ with mature, grown-n-sexy second single, “Too Long.” While it’s indeed a bit ‘too long,’ it’s enjoyable.

The boy’s Coming of Age! That’s the new album from contemporary R&B artist Sammie, who’s been around throughout the 00s. Even so, his impact in the game has been minimal.  Now 30 and grown, he hopes to make a splash, particularly September 15, when the new album arrives. As of press time, Sammie had released two singles: “Coa” and “Too Long.”

Sammie has a clear modus operandi on “Too Long.” Sex. From the jump, it’s clear that the R&B singer isn’t thinking with his head, but rather his – you get the picture. This is common in R&B – it’s been ‘going down’ for years.  It’s more pronounced and risqué in modern times, but sex isn’t new to the genre.  All in all, Sammie does a good job of capturing it.  He doesn’t go too far left, yet he’s “not that innocent” either.  Boding well in his favor are his vocals/tone and the sensual, adult contemporary R&B backdrop.  Guitar, synths, and a slow tempo work well together.

Cons? At over four-and-a-half minutes, it’s a lot of sex – at least to the listener’s ears.  Okay, it’s not the act, but rather the slow pace and the lack of a challenge that the song gives.  From the top, we know where Sammie is going, hence, there’s clear predictability.  Even though he sings it well and, for the most part, it works, it still drags on a bit.  Perhaps Sammie should have left some of the bedroom talk for the bedroom.  In other words, it’s not the most exciting or rousing track, beyond the actual participant(s).

Final Thoughts

Is “Too Long” a win or a loss.  More often than not, this is a win.  Personally, I preferred the sincerity of “Coa” more to the pleasures of this particular song.  Still, Sammie sounds amazing vocally, and he definitely makes his point. Sex, sex, sex.  This isn’t game changing, but all in all, this is a respectable slow jam.
