21-year old Chicago producer-singer-songwriter Restless Modern compels on “Haunted,” a single from his forthcoming debut EP.

Hmm, wonder what it feels like to be 21-years old with an incredibly bright musical future ahead of you? We should totally ask 21-year old Chicago producer-singer-songwriter Restless Modern. February 2018 is a special time for RM – he drops his debut EP. Judging by the third single, “Haunted,” that’s a project to look forward to, without question. NOTE: “Haunted” becomes available February 2, 2018.

Fittingly, there’s a haunting nature about the opening synths of “Haunted.” This sets the tone for the record.  Following the intro, Restless Modern drops them vocals – nice.  Overall, he exhibits a relatively low-key performance that’s smooth as butter – save for dropping that f-bomb of course (“I’m searching for the answers to / My whole fucking life / In a computer and mic”).

Ultimately, his vocals mesh well with his backdrop, which is relatively balanced before growing more dynamic.  The most dynamic production occurs sans vocals, taking the reins of “Haunted.”

Naturally, on an electronic record, the production is kind of a big deal, even more so than the vocals. That is the case on “Haunted.” Restless Modern sings well, as aforementioned, but it’s the sleek, sometimes mysterious production work that makes this joint. Those synths have some serious bite and darkness about them. The instrumental sections are the crème de la crème, showing the studio wizardry of RM.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Haunted” proves to be alluring. The production, those ‘cool, calm, and collected’ vocals – sigh. Restless Modern continues to build a case for himself as a musician.  Whether or not “Haunted” changes the game is to be determined, but in the meanwhile, it’s enjoyable, well-conceived, and well-rounded.
