Rachel Platten, Waves © ColumbiaRachel Platten saves the best for last. She drops her third single, “Collide” in advance of her second major label album, ‘Waves.’

Rachel Platten is back.  She made a splash with her 2016 major label debut, Wildfire.  Both “Fight Song” and “Stand by You” were big hits. The problem now is, how does one follow up juggernauts? Good question.  Unfortunately, as Platten drops her new album, Waves (October 27), there’s not much momentum on her side.  First single “Broken Glass” found her sporting a more contemporary sound with mixed results.  Her second promo single, “Perfect for You,” sticks with the modern sounds, with better results.  Now, she completes the pre-release promo cycle with a third single, “Collide,” arguably, her best yet.

There’s plenty to love about “Collide.”  The production is incredibly sleek and modern.  In this particular instance, this fits Rachel Platten – considerably better than “Broken Glass.” While we don’t associate Platten as “this type” of pop artist, the ‘new look’ is worth checking out.  Fundamentally, she remains the same.  She keeps it tasteful throughout “Collide,” even if she has relations on the mind.

Other things worth noting include a strong vocal performance by Platten.  While she doesn’t have the same powerhouse pipes as some of her contemporaries, she has quite a capable instrument.  She definitely “tuned in,” particularly on the chorus.  The chorus is the crowning achievement of “Collide.”

“Turn the lights on honey, honey, I don’t wanna hide / Turn the lights on honey, I’m surrendering tonight / Although I’m not perfect, I feel perfect in your eyes / Turn the lights on, honey, I don’t really wanna hide, not tonight / Come and crash into me ‘cause I want us to collide.”

Final Thoughts

Is “Collide” the best Rachel Platten single ahead of Waves.  Yes.  Will it be enough to help her fend off big competition? Probably not. But, this is a good look for Platten, regardless what happens with Waves.
