Noah Cyrus, Again © RECORDSUp-and-coming pop musician Noah Cyrus returns with a new single, “Again,” featuring an unlikely guest, XXXTentacion.

Yes, there’s another ‘Cyrus’ – Noah CyrusNoah is the younger sister of Miley Cyrus.  Like the rest of the Cyrus family, she’s a ‘musician’ too. On The Musical Hype, we covered “Stay Together” and “I’m Stuck.” “I’m Stuck” earned a ‘coveted’ spot on The 11 Worst Songs of 2017 (So Far).  Mark my words – it was well deserved. With an album in the works, the 17-year old drops another new single, “Again.”  What’s most shocking about the single is the featured guest: XXXTentacion

The good first.  “Again” manages to check off some boxes. It features respectable production work, which provides a lift.  It’s not the best produced record ever, but certainly the sound is a selling point.  Additionally, the chorus is catchy.  A catchy chorus can go a long way to build interest in a song, particularly a mediocre one.

“I wanna be your lover / I don’t wanna be your friend / You don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone my dear / So tell me that you love me again.”

If you wish to add another good point, arguably, it’s the aforementioned guest appearance by XXXTentacion.

The rubs. This isn’t a really deep, great, or transcendent song.  It’s okay, but the subject matter is cliché, the vocals are merely okay, and there’s nothing ‘killer’ here.  Perhaps the appearance of XXXTentacion provides a lift given the rapper’s ascent, but after listening, personally the thinking is, “so what?” We won’t remember “Again” by Noah Cyrus.

Final Thoughts

How does “Again” stack up? Eh, at best, it’s okay.  As mentioned earlier, it checks off certain boxes (production, chorus, up-and-coming rap sensation).  Still, there is a crowd that will clearly overrate this song and Noah Cyrus herself.  That audience, likely the more youthful members of society, have likely missed much better, more accomplished pop music/artists than this. Cyrus is okay, but we mustn’t forget she’s just 17 and has a long way to go to establish herself as a serious pop threat.
