British alternative artist Morrissey comes back roaring with “Spent the Day in Bed,” the promo single for his 2017 LP, Low in High School.

A veteran musician has returned! That veteran musician is Morrissey, the former frontman of The Smiths and revered solo artist. Following a three-year hiatus, the 58-year old British musician returns with a new album, Low in High School, due November 17. In advance of the anticipated new project, Morrissey drops a captivating new single, “Spent the Day in Bed.”
“Spent the Day in Bed” features an excellent palette of sounds, including keyboards, acoustic guitars, and various synths and sound effects. Morrissey gives a solid vocal performance, offering clear and poised vocals, yet sounding deeply invested into the song. Thematically, he seems to be focused on taking care of himself, and avoiding the power and effect of the media. On the chorus, he urges:
“Stop watching the news! Because the news contrives to frighten you To make you feel small and alone To make you feel that your mind isn’t your own.”
Morrisey’s message is smart, but is it reasonable? To an extent, we can stay away from the news, BUT ‘won’t trouble find us’ anyways? Maybe, hence, one can read into the message in that regard too. Don’t search for trouble, it’ll find you soon enough and/or enjoy yourself in the moment and avoid buzzkill.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Morrissey nails it with “Spent the Day in Bed.” He delivers a strong vocal performance, and the overall sound of the record is different, yet intriguing. The messaging is thought-provoking. There are no glaring cons to be found here. Low in High School, hence, is off to a blazing start.
