Marty O'Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra, Stereoscope © Marty O'Reilly & The Old Soul OrchestraIndie-rock/blues band Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra thrill on “Off and On Again,” a single from their forthcoming album, Stereoscope (February 9, 2018).

Somewhere, behind the trending pop and urban music, there’s an indie-rock/ blues artist or band that deserves some love.  That’s the case with Marty O’Reilly, who isn’t a ‘household name.’ Perhaps he should be, given excellent single, “Off and On Again.” As much as O’Reilly is the focal point on single “Off and On Again,” he couldn’t do it with the support of The Old Soul Orchestra. Clearly a special group, The Old Soul Orchestra features Chris Lynch (fiddle), Ben Berry (upright bass), and Matt Goff (drums and percussion). “Off and On Again” appears on the band’s upcoming album, Stereoscope (February 9, 2018).

“Off and On Again” exhibits a ‘rootsy,’ folky sound. The record has an impressive, intimate, singer-songwriter quality.  The production is anchored by rhythmic drums and rhythm guitar. Notably on “Off and On Again,” Lynch’s fiddle playing is an incredibly valuable part of the timbre, particularly the longer tones. From the jump, it’s clear that Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra understand their artistic identity and musical niche. There’s a clear confidence; their approach feels natural, yielding awe-inspiring results.

Marty O’Reilly delivers compelling, expressive vocals. He possesses a genuine, organic soulfulness. Beyond the soulful characterization, O’Reilly’s tone sounds weathered and gritty. He doesn’t possess the falsetto prowess of many pop/R&B artists. In some worlds, that would be knock. It’s not for him, as his coarseness and grittiness just amplify his authenticity and character.

Final Thoughts

Flaws, flaws, are there any noteworthy flaws? No. Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra outdo themselves on “Off and On Again.” Top-notch musicianship is exhibited from all parties – no objections whatsoever. Great vocals, great music, and awesome songwriting. Authenticity to the nth degree.
