DJ-producer Marshmello, with an assist by British singer Anne-Marie, drops another hit with feisty single, “FRIENDS.” 

“Haven’t I made it obvious? / Haven’t I made it clear? / Want me to spell it out for you? / F-R-I-EN-D-S.” Marshmello has been on fire as of late.  The DJ/producer is prepping his sophomore album, the follow-up to his 2016 debut, Joytime. After making us ‘shed a tear’ with posthumous Lil Peep collaboration “Spotlight,” he brings the goods once again with “FRIENDS,” featuring British singer Anne-Marie. 

“FRIENDS” is set in a minor key, but sounds exuberant regardless. As a producer, Marshmello is on-point. The production cue that stands out most is the prominence of the guitar on the intro and verses.  Even with the semi-dark vibe thanks to the minor key, the guitar conveys a sense of cool – ‘chill’ if you will.  The first verse is relatively light, carried by the aforementioned guitar.  The drum programming doesn’t arrive until the chorus.  That’s fitting pacing. Naturally, the second verse is more fully-produced, anchored by drums, unlike the first verse.

Moving beyond Marshmello, what about our singer, Anne-Marie? Anne-Marie delivers unapologetic, feisty vocals. In regards to her musical personality, she’s chocked-full of attitude. We wouldn’t have it any other way, particularly when she gets a bit salty.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, Marshmello and Anne-Marie make sweet music together on “FRIENDS.” Solid production, pacing, and feisty vocals. It’s not groundbreaking, but enjoyable by all means.
