Mali Music, The Transition of Mali © RCAOn his single “My Life,” Mali Music offers another excellent example of a secular song with positive, uplifting, and transcendent messaging.

Once upon a time, Mali Music was a gospel artist.  Prior to his 2014 R&B album, Mali Is…, Mali Music was known more for his spiritually-driven endeavors.  Nonetheless, Mali Is, as well as his 2017 effort, The Transition of Mali, both have their fair share of spiritual messaging.  Five singles arrived ahead of The Transition of Mali, including “My Life.”

“My Life” features solid production work, incorporating both R&B and hip-hop cues.  The song is a bit quirky from the start. Mali Music sort of speaks, quasi-raps, then employs his singing voice.  After a while, the listener sees what direction the eclectic artist is going in. The modus operandi of “My Life” appears to be spiritual health, a prevalent topic in Mali’s music.

On the first verse, he comments on spiritual emptiness:

“You know we spend a whole lot of time / Thinking we living when we dead inside… / Because we are all deaf / And we so, so blind…”

On the second verse, Mali seems to providing commentary on the sentiment of letting go and letting God.

“See we using a whole lot of energy trying to hold it all together / When the truth is busting out the seams…”

The chorus is the best aspect of the song.  Everything comes together there.  The addition of the guitar here, adds some edge:

“Sometimes I feel like, I got nowhere to go / My days get dark and my nights get cold / That’s when I need you / I know I’m running long / So if you got the peace, if you got the love / Say I need it in my life, my life, my life, alone…”

Final Thoughts

While Mali Music is a secular artist these days, his music still retains spiritual elements.  He continues to minister through his music.  “My Life” is another excellent example of a secular song with positive, transcendent messaging.  It’s not perfect, but overall, it’s successful.
