Madonna, Hung Up | DANCE GEMZ 🕺 💎 🎶

In the 13^th edition of DANCE GEMZ 🕺 💎 🎶 (2023), we totally get down with Madonna performing the danceable gem, “Hung Up.” 

“Time goes by so slowly.” Prepare to take it to the dance floor, folks! DANCE GEMZ 🕺 💎 🎶 is a column that celebrates awesome dance songs from the past and present.  The records that grace DANCE GEMZ 🕺 💎 🎶 aren’t merely limited to music explicitly characterized as dance.  That means all genres of music – electronic, pop, rock, disco, etc. – are welcome as long as the particular song is associated with dance. In the 13^th  edition of DANCE GEMZ 🕺 💎 🎶 (2023), we totally get down with 🎙 Madonna performing the danceable gem, 🎵 “Hung Up”.

“Every little thing that you say or do / I’m hung up, I’m hung up on you.” I can relate, 🎙 Madonna.  The iconic pop artist continues singing on 🎵 “Hung Up”, “Waiting for your call, baby, night and day / I’m fed up, I’m tired of waiting on you.” Throw waiting on your crush or significant other to text you can be excruciating too! Anyways, “Hung Up,” which graces Madge’s 2005, 🏆 Grammy winning album, 💿 Confessions on a Dance Floor, is one of her best contemporary singles. “Hung Up” performed solidly on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at no. 7.  Why was this dance cut a hit, decades into her career? Well, it benefits from its groove, picturesque backdrop, and her easygoing, hypnotic vocals. “Time goes so slowly for those who wait,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “No time to hesitate.” Furthermore, what about the repeated words (“Ring, ring, ring”) onomatopoeia (“tick, tick, tock”) in the second verse.

“Hung Up” was written by Madonna, 🎼 ✍ Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Stuart Price.  Furthermore, Madge and Price produce this dance fire 🔥.  The beat wills those feet up on the dance floor – whether that’s at home or the club 🕺 🪩. What stands out about the credits are two familiar names from an iconic Swedish pop collective – Andersson and Ulvaeus are members of 🎙 ABBA.  They are credited because “Hung” up prominently samples the ABBA classic, 🎵 “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme (A Man After Midnight)”. Furthermore, Madge samples herself – 🎵 “Love Song” from her 1989 album, 💿 Like A Prayer.  What more is there to be said? 🎵 “Hung Up” speaks for itself, remaining a bop well into the 2020s.  It feels totally appropriate to quote the icon herself: 🎵 “Bitch, I’m Madonna”!
