3.5 out of 5 stars

Lostboycrow, Church with No Ceiling © LostboycrowDespite being filled with religious references, Lostboycrow doesn’t embrace church and your typical brand of spirituality on alluring single, “Church with No Ceiling.”

Who is Lostboycrow – “That is the question!” The long-haired musician is a pop-R&B artist based in Los Angeles, California.  Over the last couple of years, he’s released numerous singles.  The single at hand, “Church with No Ceiling,” marks my first experience with the musician. How does he and “Church with No Ceiling” stack up?

From the start, the sound is mysterious and somewhat nebulous.  While it’s a distinct instrumental, this definitely piques interest, particular for less familiar, up-and-coming artist. Eventually, “Church with No Ceiling” settles into a more accessible territory, but not without losing its uniqueness.  Lostboycrow has a terrific voice, particularly when he hits that falsetto.  He feels like he’s in his niche, slating somewhere between pop and R&B, as self-described.

Lyrically, he plays on religion and spirituality, a popular approach in recent times.  “I got no religion / Not since I got saved,” he sings on the first pre-chorus.  He continues, “I got no religion / I believe in living / And it has no name.” Progressive. He sums up his church with no ceiling on the chorus.

“There’s no ceilings where we pray / And there’s no signs saying you can’t stay / There’s no steeple covering the stars / We believe in / In a church with no ceiling.”

Filled with religious references, on the second verse, Lostboycrow mentions the spirit, holy wine, and born-again truth. Clever. The outro is also quite unique, and honest about life.

“And I swear to God / We are just children / Only afraid of / Being afraid / What we afraid of? / And why we afraid? / Serenity, divinity / Losing my virginity / Losing, finding my identity…”

Final Thoughts

Clearly, Lostboycrow is an artist to watch.  He shows that he’s quite alluring on “Church with No Ceiling.” No, “Church” is unlikely to find itself playing on the radio or hitting the Top 40, but it’s definitely interesting.
