“Broken People,” the fourth single issued in advance of soundtrack ‘Bright: The Album,’ pairs Grammy-nominated rapper Logic and Rag’N’Bone Man.

Bright, the film, may be the source for the latest star-studded, jam-packed soundtrack, Bright: The Album.  After releasing three singles as of publication time, the fourth single from Bright arrives: “Broken People,” pairing rapper Logic and soulful singer Rag’N’Bone Man. Rag’N’Bone Man kicks off “Broken People” passionately with the chorus, which is chocked-full of vocal grit and emotion.  Initially, the accompaniment is relatively simple – chordal piano, set in minor.

“We’re broken people now / We’re burning out / So cold and bleeding now-now-now / Gonna let you down / We’re broken people now / We’re broken people now.”

The final two lines of the chorus – the titular lyrics – signal full-fledged production and greater emotional investment. Logic follows with his usual commanding flow, approaching his rhymes on both verses in more of a pop-rap manner.  Notably, each verse is followed up by a bridge, before the return of the soaring Rag’N’Bone Man chorus.

“Yes, I’ve been through it / They know I do it for the people / I’m fighting so we be equal / For my son and my sequel…”

Rag’N’Bone Man also gets a short verse, essentially a variation on the chorus he familiarizes us with throughout the song.

Final Thoughts 

All in all, “Broken People” is enjoyable.  Combine the passion and energy of Rag’N’Bone, the great flow of Logic, and superb production work, and “Broken People” is incredibly sound.  Does it still feel like the soundtrack cut that it is? Yes, but it’s incredibly difficult to separate a song from a soundtrack with its soundtrack origins, if that makes any sense.
