Lil Skies, Life of a Dark Rose © All We Got Ent.Up-and-coming rapper Lil Skies releases an enjoyable, easy-going single, “Red Roses,” in advance of his highly-anticipated debut album, ‘Life of a Dark Rose.’  He’s assisted by Landon Cube.

On Spotify, “Red Roses” ranked as the most popular song by up-and-coming rapper, Lil Skies.  Fittingly, “Red Roses” appears on Skies’ highly-anticipated debut album, Life of a Dark Rose. He isn’t solo on the popular single, as he’s assisted by Landon Cube, who also makes an appearance on another pre-release single from the album, “Nowadays.” At nearly four-and-a-half minutes, “Red Roses” is longer than the aforementioned single, not to mention other teaser tracks (“Lust” and “Signs of Jealousy”).

In 2017, much of rap music had a familiar sound: mysterious, faded production work, anchored by bass-heavy drums.  That’s the case with “Red Roses,” which sounds familiar – it’s not unpredictable regarding sound.  As far as his rhymes, his pop-rap is respectable – his flow is compelling.  Are his rhymes formidable? Eh, not necessarily, but he rides the beat well. As for Cube, he takes the second verse, like on “Nowadays.” Arguably, his verse is more interesting because of its quirks, including vocal distortion and passionate, profane moments.

Final Thoughts

What about it? Is “Red Roses” a winner or pretender – ‘what it is’ or ‘what it isn’t?’ All in all, there’s something here. Perhaps what exactly is the question, but, there’s pros that bode well in Lil Skies favor.  This isn’t profundity or transcendence at its best, but its enjoyable and easy on the ears – for the most part.
