Lights, Skin & Earth © Warner Bros.Canadian pop artist Lights drops a compelling second single from her forthcoming September 2017 album, Skin & Earth, “Skydiving.”

Lights is back! The Canadian electro-soul artist returns with a highly-anticipated new album, Skin & Earth (September 22).  As of publication time, Lights dropped three singles in advance of the album: “Giants,” “Skydiving,” and “Savage.” After setting the tone with “Giants,” “Skydiving” gives her another enjoyable song to add to her collection.

“Skydiving” opens lushly with effects-laden vocals.  Despite incorporating ample production wizardry, the resulting sound is cool. This doesn’t last, as Lights commences the standard, pop vocal performance.  While her vocals are a bit more staccato as opposed to the lush, longer tones that occur initially, there’s still a sense of lush, sexy vibes throughout.  Her vocal tone is perfectly suited for this single, which exemplifies a self-described electro-soul sound.  This is the type of track that should play well with pop, dance, and urban audiences.

The pros of “Skydiving” far outweigh cons.  Lights sounds superb, so her vocal performance is by no mean a con.  The production, likewise, is strong, from start to finish.  The chorus is simple, yet catchy and highly effective:

“You got me skydiving / You got me high flying / Oh, I’m jumping off of the world now / Never stop, never slow down / Skydiving.”

So, are there any glaring cons? Not particularly.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Lights has done it again.  Following “Giant,” she delivers another gem with “Skydiving.” “Skydiving” checks off all the boxes: excellent production, top-notch vocals, and catchy lyrics, specifically the chorus.  This sets up Skin & Earth nicely.
