Lights, Skin & Earth © Warner Bros.Canadian artist Lights returns in a gigantic way with “Giants,” the adventurous promo single for her new album, ‘Skin & Earth.’

Lights is back! The Canadian ‘ElectroSoul’ artists returns with a highly-anticipated new album, Skin & Earth (September 22).  On the first single from Skin & Earth, “Giants,” Lights asserts, “Where we could be giants / Bigger than the walls that hide us.” Clearly, she doesn’t want the walls to hold her back and keep her from being more.  Who can blame her?

“Giants” is a satisfying record without question.  Among its many pros is the production work.  On the first verse of “Giants,” The sound seems most influenced by electronic music.  This is the genre we most associate with Lights, regardless of her acoustic output. On the second verse, there is still electronic influence, but the groove has a more soulful sound.  Another contrast.  The biggest contrast occurs on the chorus, which exhibits more of a pop/rock sound.  It’s a lot of shifts for a three-minute record, but amazingly, it works superbly.

As far as the messaging, as aforementioned, there’s a sentiment of letting nothing hold you back.  This is exemplified by verses and the chorus, excerpted above.  In the full-fledged glory of the chorus, Lights sings:

“Where we could be giants / Bigger than the walls that hide us / Breaking all the laws of science / Looking at a sea of diamonds / If we could be, we could be giants, oh / If we could be giants, oh.”

Final Thoughts

So, does Lights have a gem on her hand? Yes. “Giants” isn’t necessarily the best song of 2017, but it’s a solid promo single for Skin & Earth.  The message is respectable by all means, while she gives a strong vocal performance, backed by strong production work.  Again, the stylistic shifts are a selling point.
