Rock band Kings of Leon returns after a three-year hiatus. The collective’s new album, Walls arrives October 14. Promo single “Waste a Moment” foreshadows what to expect from KOL.  Overall, it’s reminiscent of the past. That’s a pro and a con to an extent.

“Waste a Moment” initiates excellently with a driving bass line. The production work is exuberant and enthusiastic in quality.  The groove is fantastic. The guitars sound particularly sound, sporting an exceptional, ideal timbre. Frontman Caleb Followill delivers powerful, clear vocals. He doesn’t “miss a beat” despite the hiatus.

The song is about rebelliousness and being carefree. This is illustrated by references to the female protagonist being a “ticking time bomb, time bomb gonna blow us all away.” Her boyfriend is “a live wire, wire, shooting sparks in the night.”

The chorus sounds as powerful as anything else KOL have released. It yields a familiar sound and quality:

“Oh, take the time to waste a moment
Oh, facing where the lines are broken
Oh, name a price to all this living
Oh, never ask to be forgiven.”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Waste a Moment” is a respectable comeback single for Kings of Leon.  This single isn’t “the second coming,” but enjoyable. It is successful because it has many familiar features expected of Kings of Leon.  Not exactly a “wow” moment, but rock solid.
