Veteran pop artist Kelly Clarkson remains consistent on “Meaning of Life,” the third single from her album of the same title.

Kelly Clarkson is one of the most consistent pop artists, period. After wowing with two superb singles ahead of Meaning of Life (“Love So Soft” and “Move You”), Clarkson returns with a third single.  That third single happens to be the title, “Meaning of Life.”

“Meaning of Life” has a retro-pop, retro-soul quality.  This is thanks to the gritty lead vocals by Clarkson, backing vocals, and the six-eight, time signature.  Throughout the song, there are some truly lovely, poetic lyrics.  On the first verse, Clarkson sings:

“Baby, I’ve been living in the dark
The only friend I’ve got here is my broken heart
Feeling like I’ve finally had enough
Living like an animal can be so rough.”

The second verse yields more of the same. The pre-chorus serves as a solid lead-in to the chorus. It’s short, but sweet. As for the chorus, it’s powerful and well-written. Clarkson flaunts her vocal abilities.

“When you hold me, I finally see
When you say love, I know what it means
I was broke down so alone in the dark
Until you showed me the light 
Cause when you kiss me, I know who I am
And when you let me feel it, I understand
When I’m lost I just look in your eyes
You show me the meaning of life
Meaning of life, life, life, life.”

On the bridge, the production pulls back initially.  Soon enough, the energy gradually builds back up, with Clarkson’s lead vocals, as well as the supporting vocals.  Throughout “Meaning of Life,” her best attribute is her voice.  It’s nothing short of amazing, particular when she ad-libs and showcases her sheer power.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Meaning of Life” is another superb Kelly Clarkson record.  Perhaps it’s not as accomplished as “Love So Soft” or “Move You,” but it’s definitely consistent.  It’s hard to stifle a high-flying singer like Clarkson is. She’s truly one of a kind.
